Juggling Jay
Met up with Brian Phipps to photograph some very tame Jays - this wasn't my favourite image as I got some very nice images off the ground. I have posted this as I purchased the 5DMkII about a month ago as a second body and I'm very pleased. It's not really an action camera with four frames a second but the files are good and you really can crop an image.

The above image is less than 50% of the frame and you still have a file close to 30mb this image was shot at 640 iso with no noise reduction and the whole image sharpened. The close-up is shown at 100% and a massive crop of the original. Although noise is visible without noise reduction I feel this level is more than acceptable.

This is the 100% crop!

Good stuff David.
Can you explain what 100% crop is please. ?

100% crop is pixel for pixel, ie you are viewing (or cut out sampling) 541 x 720 pixels for the final screen image from the 541 x 720 pixels contained in the original image - ie no resizing in even simpler terms.....

Wickedly sharp image BTW

Hi John

Yes Mike has explained it well - the crop is shown at 'actual pixels'

The crop shows perfectly how far digital cameras have moved on regards noise reduction but you still need to expose the shot correctly, which obviously you have....

Nice work.

Wonderful action shot David, but you shouldn't have posted it. It encourages the temptation demons

Hi Tony

You have made a good point with regard to getting your exposure right when using higher iso settings as this will degrade your image and increase noise if you need to adjust your exposure in RAW

I am very pleased to see this shot, particularly as its on the new 5D. Have been interested in seeing images out of this new camera since its launch. It doesn't disappoint. I heard the enviro seal has been improved over its predecessor too. Really like this Jay shot. Its is vibrant, even though the weather looks quite dull. Love the mid-air nut.

The frost and action make this a very nice shot. Amazing detail in the crop

A cracking shot David and nice to see more good news about the 5D2. Amazing sharpness in that crop and great flexibility with the large numbers of pixels. I think it might make my computer grind a bit slowly though...

Going off topic a bit here, I keep hearing that the new 5D has issues & a freind of mine who did want one is holding off from buying one but this image after the big crop suggests otherwise.

Hi Dave

I was thinking about getting a 5D MK2, certainly made me think very seriously about it, impresive shot

The camera has performed well, as it had caught the action superbly. Interesting second post.

Hi David,
A moment caught perfectly and the dew coated grass makes a wonderful setting.
Thanks for sharing your findings on the new camera. Image quality looks excellent.
Even on the 100% crop I don't find any noise detrimental to the image in the slightest and of course on a print at normal viewing distances it would be virtually undetectable IMO.

I remember you showing me it on the day, amazing image quality!!

A great capture...another one I missed!
