Current situation have new Canon 5Dmk2, PS3 and Lightroom 1.4. Neither programs can convert new Canon files, so I downloaded per recommendations here the Adobe DNG Converter program. What I have noticed is a change in the file size, pixels and the colors plus most images tend to come out darker. Has anybody else noticed this? Any sugguestions?

I'm not surprised by the file size change Jody, and the images coming out darker may have something to do with your defaults in ACR - you may need to find a set for the DNG that works for you. When you say a change in the pixels, are you saying that an image captured as X by Y (like 3000 x 2000 pixels) is coming out at some other resolution (like 2800 x 1800 or something)? If so, that would be very weird....I've done some conversions with ACR DNG converter and it always preserved the actual image data just fine. The RAW developer may have interpreted it differently, but the info was still there.

DNG files are about 10-20% smaller than CR2 files, but all the data is there and pixel dimensions should remain unchanged.

Yes pixels dimensions are smaller after conversion. File sizes drop from 21mb to around 17mb.

I have been contemplating switching to DNG recently. I just did a test on one image from my 40D. Original CR2 file is 12.9 MB and 3888 X 2592 pixels. DNG file is 11.1 MB and 3888 X 2592 Pixels. My eye cannot see any discernible difference in the image on my monitor in LR.

What are the pixel dimensions of the DNG file as opposed to the original RAW file?
The smaller file size (MB) is a given because the file is losslessly compressed.

My experience is the same as Ed's.

CR2 file 5616 x 3744 pixels 27.4MB
DNG file 5792 x 3804 pixels 22.4MB

CR2 small pixel size but large file???

There used to be a version of the DNG converter that recovered edge pixels normally excluded in any conversion to avoid some "funny" stuff on the edges of the image. It was handy when you'd clipped the toe of a perched bird or wingtip. Are you sure you are using the DNG converter and not the "recover edges" version?

Here's the info panel on the recover edges app.

Rich, I am using the regular DNG Converter not the one you mentioned.
