Got back from 5 day trip to Bosque and White sands. It was extremely productive and I really worked on my birds in flight techniques. The cranes often fly in pairs in almost perfect sync! You can see a larger version on the Avian forum.

Every breath they take, every move they make, you'll be watching them. (get it?!)
Cool shot, Steve.

Great shot, Steve! I love the relationship between the birds and the upward angled plane along their backs. Have you tried a pano crop to minimize the upper background?

Sweet shot, Steve. I studied it for awhile and noticed the cranes in the background having a little crane meeting. What was your success rate capturing birds in flight? Is this handheld or loose tripod?
Dave
This was on a tripod with a Wimberly sidekick, D700 with 200-400 +1.4TC
My flight shot success rate( ie good focus) was a amazingly good with this set up ~75%
The D700 autofocus is pretty amazing
I did a few hand held without the 1.4 also with good sucess, but the wimberly is really the way to go ( less tiring on the arms)
