Northwest Forest
Taken while backpacking way off-trail somewhere in the North Cascades. Although the subject matter is nothing more than a typical mid-elevation conifer forest, I found it all quite beautiful at this spot.

Thanks for your comments.

1Ds III, 24mm, 4 seconds at f/14, polarizer.

Very nice Marc. Another great of example of creating order out of chaos in the forest. These shots are extremely challenging and you have done very well here. I can feel the coolness of the shadows contrasting the warmth of the sun. :toast: -Bryan

Marc, what a beautiful image. The range of tones and luminance doesn't seem possible, but it's there! I think you also did a great job on the edges. There are branches entering all around yet everything feels natural, not cut off. I'll be studying this one for a while.

Beautiful Marc. You can take the most ordinary image and turn it into an jaw dropping capture. Was this on a scouting trip?

Ray, this was on an 8-day backpack I did in late August. This one was pretty strait-forward. The morning light was partially filtered in the background, emerging onto the scene. Nature was cooperative this morning by giving me good conditions to shoot in.

Very Nice Marc, I love your forest shots. A quick question, which would be the best time in spring to hike Eagle Creek in the Gorge?

I guess I'm having trouble shaking off my LF days of perspective control but the outward leaning trees on both sides of center are distracting to me. The lighting and mood it evokes are terrific.

REALLY BEAUTIFUL CAPTURE, MARC. As usual your capturing light puts the viewer on scene with you! Really love this one!

Beautifully done. It looks like a classic from a master, which it is.

The uncanny symmetry of the BG trees is very well seen. I am also really liking the tonal separation of the FG elements. Greens always seem hard to capture correctly, and getting them to look defined from one another is something that I have been working on lately. A bit different from your normal dynamic style but very nice in its subtleness and composition.

What I like most is how the younger, lighter green tree in the BG is framed between the row of trees on either side. I especially love the righthand side trees which are in clean rapid succession.

It's not always about big dramatic skies (but I know that's what pays the bills!).

Marc - great work! There's a very delicate and detailed look to this that is tough to gaze away from...

Very nice shot, Marc. awesome processing, it almost looks 3D.

Awesome scene Marc - it's certainly difficult to extract a comp from within a forest and you managed this masterfully...

Very nice, Marc. It's amazing how you can be hiking through mundane forest and then all of a sudden come upon a scene that somehow stands out. It could be a particular grouping of trees, an especially lush stand of ferns, or just a spot where all the elements come together to catch your eye and make you pause. It's especially good when you have your camera on hand to capture the scene!

Beautiful! Were you trying to find the route up Easy Ridge from the Chilliwack River or did you shoot Whatcom Peak from another angle?

Lovely hues and tones here. How in the world do you control light so well!? Awesome.

Well done - the color is subdued on this one - I'd like it a tad more velvia-ish but it's lovely this way as well....

This has such a soft, almost "misty" atmosphere. The detail and light add up to make this one of your best forest shots imo. Another winner! :toast:
