I'm in the process of converting to a vista 64 bit system from my older XP version. I'm having trouble installing scanners and printers that were designed for the XP 32 bit version of windows.
Even though I've downloaded the needed software for the Vista 64 bit system I'm still having problems getting the equipment setup in the new system.
Thought I would try here first before the agonizing phone process with tech support

Depends on the peripherals used. If the scanner and printer are 'upgradeable', then you'll find Vista 64 bit drivers at their respective websites.
When I migrated to Vista 64 bit, I was able to find drivers for my 8 year old Canon printer, but not my ancient flatbed scanner nor my Nikon Coolscan IV. Fortunately, I was finished with the tedious chore of film scanning.
Are you installing the drivers before you plug in the hardware?

John,
This is more or less the question I have, do I install the software that came with the peripherals first and then perform the upgrade? I have three peripherals to setup , An Epson 4800 printer, Epson 1400 printer and an Epson Perfection 3200 FB Scanner.
I've been working with the 3200 scanner first and so far no luck in getting it set up on the Vista 64 bit system even though the the website offers a 64 bit version of the software.
I did download and run the driver prior to actually plugging in the scanner .

The new drivers have all of the info. needed to get you up and running, so there's no need to install the old drivers first. That may even cause a conflict, though I'm not sure.
Are you trying to use the scanner as a 'standalone'(WIA driver) or via TWAIN (through Photoshop)?

Well it turns out that the Epson 3200 flatbed scanner is not and never will be supported in the 64-bit platform. And if I understand this correctly - SilverFast has a 64-bit update for this scanner but the Epson scan software needs to be installed first which isn't compatible. Seems useless to me!
After doing some looking, I haven't found a scanner that specifically says it supports Vista 64-bit OS, fortunately the old XP system is functional and I can use it for now to do any FB scanning. This is mostly limited to 6x7 and 4x5 images that I want to work with before I pay the price of a drum scan.
All in all, this and an issue with Expression Media have been the only two problems moving to Vista.
