Taken one of my tute students up to 'THAT DALE' today - light a bit grim and by jingle was the breeze a tad chilly
He's just got himself a new 600mm and this was the first outing with it - just thought I'd post this for him so he can get some feedback - so be nice folks as he's a bit shy
His name is Craig by the way!
He's gone for a cover-style shot, but funnily enough it doesn't seem to work 'flipped', but he's still chuffed to bits with it and so am I
A very good effort Craig particularly when trying to tame the 600mm beast.
My suggestion would be to crop to just above the apex of the bottom 'arch' of the branch so as to lose the water beyond. I find the water a distraction and it doesn't add to the image in my opinion
I like it, just find there is a little too much above?
When will you b posting yours Andy?

I think it's great! First time I tried my 600, I felt like taking it back to the shop as most shots were rubbish. Focus looks good, really sharp, smooth background and enough room at the top for the name of the magazine. A head turn would have been a bonus.

Yes nice shot, but the dappled bright section beneath the perch catches my eye a little too much. Maybe if the top bit of it was the same as the background.
Easily remedied as I am sure Andy can explain.

I'd be chuffed with this too, Craig. The only nit is already dealt with, I hope we will see some more work of yours in the future

That's a beauty and all the better for a bit of space imo. Makes a change from the standard dipper shots as well. Let's see some more. Eric

Craig - I think this is a cracking shot - wish it was mine! I like the cover shot approach and would be tempted to tone down the highlight from the water under the branch .. but not too much ..

Nice image Craig. Never had the opportunity for a Dipper and would love one like this. I'd take a bit off the top and off the bottom to the top of the bright highlight in the water. But that's not ideal for a cover shot and what do i know anyway!!!
Look forward to more

Very nice - good subject, good background and the water gives a good sense of environment.
Top stuff.

I think tghe reason the water is distracting iis that the highlights on it are at an angle wheras the core composition is straight.
Minor nit though - it's a nice image and a different perch for sure so you should be pleased Craig - hope you've got the muscles to lug that 600 around!!

I like it, the water works for me as its indicative of the birds habitat needs. Very nice!

Very nice Craig, a well thought out shot, executed superbly. Bearing in mind the thought of a cover shot I would leave it as is, as you are leaving the publisher options.

Hello to Craig.
Its a craking Dipper shot and one you should be well pleased with. Love the composition and feel to this one as well.
Im not to sure if I would crop or not as I feel the amount of space at the bottom is just right.
