A very well seen and unusual image of a hedgehog but to me it looks as if the point of focus is slightly behind the hedgehogs nose which kind of spoils it a bit.

Not the usual habitat, but still an excellent shot. Well seen and executed.

I think we should all remember that a hedgehog about in the daytime is a hedgehog in trouble.

Not over here Paul. A lot of the hedgehogs are active during the afternoon and early morning. We see them a lot during the daytime. Very easy animals. They will eat out of your hand if you bring them some mealworms.

Great image BTW. A bit soft on the nose.

Hi Edwin,

It's interesting to hear that hedgehogs have different habits on mainland Europe (not mentioned in any of the mammal books I've got though). But as Guy's in England I'm assuming the photo was taken here.

In England I would normally agree with Paul, but even so our garden hedgehogs in Kent sometimes appear well before sunset. I guess it just depends how hungry they are. Great shot by the way.

Hello to all and thanks for the comments.

I think I should have said in the techs that this was taken in August. I came across this hedgehog at about 6.30 in the morning on my way to look for dragonflies. He seemed quite happy foraging in the leaves and cheaking the gaps in the wall. I am no hedgehog expert but he seemed very alert, a good size and in very good condition. I had about five minites with him before he went through a metal railed gate and on his way. As it was August I was not to worried as he still had plenty of time to get ready for winter. And probably ( hopefuly ) just had a back nights hunting and was getting some over time in.

All the best Guy.
