Excuses, excuses but i tried to take this bird in very poor light with rain just to make it more interesting but i only had the one chance.
Used fill flash, dodge and burn in psp 9 and a little usm to try and lift it.
Please let me know your thoughts.

Hi Kieth
I think this bird photograph as a subject deserves a litle bit more appreciation than it has recieved. The picture has its faults as you and I have discussed privately, but it at least it shows the bird as it is in a bleak moorland situation. It could be lifted a little in the darker areas but still invokes in me a feeling of the habitat which these birds are found in.
I was once accused of "disturbing" these on a lek in Wales from about 60 yards by the local "group "who I later found out were ringers, and that were netting them at 60 miles per hour and sticking a radios up their arses , - but that was science.
Dear oh dear !

Like John has said, it is a nice environment image, also it would be nice to get a little more detail in the blacks - I assume it can still be bought back in PS?
For me, there is a good shot there but perhaps go back and have another play with the grouse.
I think I would at least consider cropping out the soft grasses on the right, that aside, this is how the bird is under the weather conditions you describe.
You know where they are, and with this under your belt, you are better prepared for a return visit.

I agree about the black.
Nice to see the tail up too.
