Little Stony in the Snow
I captured this out in my travels this week. Pretty delicate to move around the falls with the snow and ice everywhere!! I partially polarized to keep a bit of texture in the water. Shot taken with Nikon D3, Nikon 17-35mm, Nikon polarizer, Gitzo 3540LS, Markins M20. Love to hear any feedback!!

Hey Chris your in my neck of the woods now! I'm about an hour from there and I'm over due for a return trip! Looks like I missed a great opportunity! Nice shot and I bet it was pretty treacherous getting to this spot. Looks like the tree has washed out of the way, last time I was the tree to your right had recently fallen and was sticking up in the plunge pool.

Hey Chris. Great shot. I really like the composition. I was there last year and the falls and pool were completely frozen over. It was interesting, but I think the open water is more interesting. Did you come up the creek or park at the top near the falls? We hiked up and really enjoyed all the frozen water along the way.

You're just a few miles up the road from me. Maybe our paths will cross sometime.

Thomas, it's still there!!! You have to do some series maneuvering to get it out of the shot and given the ice all over the place it was "breath taking"!!!! That tree always gave me grief trying to get a broader frame from the left hand side of the creek, I guess no more, well at least until it deteriorates in the pool a bit more. Stoney is only about an hour from my house also, and one of my fav local spots. We will have to try to coordinate a trip to there, Tumbling Creek, or in the vicinity some time!

Sounds like a plan Chris! Here's an image from a year ago or so from just about the same spot your standing :) I've been down in there with some snow on the ground but nothing like your shot.

Both of these shots are beauties.

I would love to get up there and shoot this place with you guys some day, preferably with ice and snow.

Very nice scene indeed. I like it cropped at the break in the fg ice because it makes it less heavy on the left side. Nice saturation.

Anytime you are welcome to join Lance, but if you want ice and snow you may have to be on a quick standby!!! We only get the white stuff with inconsistent timing and amount!

Leann, thanks for the feedback. Are you thinking of a crop starting at the corner of the fg snow under the ledge and extending to the top right corner? I have a shot similar to that if so. I will have to play around with that file and see what we get!! I worked this one first as I liked the falls being not centered and it provided more atmosphere of the spot. Thanks again!

Chris I was thinking about something like this:-)

Nice shot Chris. I like Leann's crop or even with a little bit more of the water on the left showing at the bottom. The subtle colors of the cliff, trees, and pool really pop relative to the near monochromatic snow.

John

Nice pic, Chris. Both versions are really beautiful, but Leann's crop does lose the wonderful color and texture introduced by the submerged rocks. Their redness really sets off the green water.
