Barn Owl enviro
1DIIn, 500/4 + 1.4, 1/320 f5.6, iso 400, tripod

This is an image influenced by Nigel Blake and Chris Gomersall (and I am sure several other images I have seen!) - sorry for copying chaps.

This was taken almost straight into what little sun there was and is about 2/3 frame (the owl was under the central focus point). I'm still not sure whether it works or not and would be interested to hear others views

Thanks

Gary

I like it. When looking at these enviro shots I always try to imagine an article or a book on the subject and then think how boring that book would become if all images of the subjects were close ups and portraits. We need variety and this fits the bill admirably in my opinion.

Gary,
Wasn't sure if it was a bit too enviro to start with, but the more i look at it, the more i like it.
The side light makes it for me.... :toast:

And a thumbs up from me too..... for me it always works to see a bird and how it interacts with where it lives.
I had a good day with Barn Owls yesterday, but right up the lenshood stuff.... and I actually went out to photograph (better not put shoot) 2 American bombers at Mildenhall.

Very atmospheric, an excellent shot which works really well.

Nice comp and I think it is definitely better to leave the owl small than to try and blow it up to a size that the camera' resolution can't sustain as we see so often. Robert's comment is bang on. I like to try for a range of shots on a species from the enviro like this to the close ups like Andy Astbury's avatar. That way you can build a good story and a portfolio that covers all aspects of your subject.
Good decision.

Hi Gary,

Very nice and well seen - shows you don't always have to wait for your subject to be on top of you !!

Love the light on the owl especially though - it's what makes the image work.
