Barn Relic
Jerry has these old flatbed 1940 trucks that he still uses to bring in hay from his 200 acres. Everything is old yet useful on his farm, he's still 93 with a tack sharp mind and eye, his cat is 20, born the year his wife died, and i pray that cat never rubs against me! I go visit him alot to see how hes doing and he always wonders what else i will find to photograph. I tell him things change constantly, like this shot, i took it, wandered around shooting more and came back and he had loaded the hay that was in front and on the side of the truck to feed his cows. Totally different looking all the time i tell him. Then he drug me with him to the other side of the property on his tractor to show me a dead coyote pup. Dead salmon in the creek he points out. He knows his land. Afternoon light coming in the barn door on the front, the yellow string was shining and the whole scene just caught my eye. Canon 5d, 24-70L, f/16, iso 200, 3 sec. exposure.

What a great shot. Fabulous story, too. Thanks for sharing both.

Classic! The loops in the string are curious.

What everyone else said!

It's nice that you go visit that 93 year old farmer - I bet he really enjoys getting someone to talk with. I've got a farm behind my house and the farmer is in his 80's and still going strong. When I speak to him he spits and cusses like crazy - really old school! Maybe I should see if he's got some things like this I could photograph...

The loops on the strings are from when he takes the hay out of the tied bale, he saves the string and they are all over his barn. And Jack, the history behind the truck is, Jerry got it at a police auction, he says they confiscated it from a bootlegger they caught that ran between washington and i think he said arizona. Jerry has so much stuff, egg cartons from the late thirties where he use to work during the depression. They talked these 'east coast Jews', as he says, into buying their eggs because they werent 'laid' in the heat of the midwest. They still made money by shipping them from Wa. Or. Ca. to New York via train and icing the eggs down. I think they made four cents a crate, so it was worth it till it ended a few years later when the 'east coast Jews' figured out there was nothing wrong with the midwest eggs. Thats his story and its a funny one to hear him tell it. So many more stories, anyone ever hear of the thirty year war?

Awesome job of framing that grill Cliff, I really like the composition. The colors of the truck really add too. Thanks for the background; I wouldn't have guessed the truck was currently a working part of the operation!

Really nice shot Cliff, this would make a great postcard. Cool backstory, bet you could sit there for hours listening to him weave his yarns!

I'm wondering what a B&W treatment of this might look like...? Maybe match the aged feel better?

as creative as an image that this is...I guess this is another reason why I feel this board needs a makeover.....I do wish to see more nature shots.....the car and hay are both man made........but the exposure and colors are dead on!!!!! I bet this would look killer printed up and showing all the details!
