Variations on a Rainbow
Before venturing out to shovel the snow, I'll procrastinate and share some images from greener days.

Morning storm clearing from Ice Lakes Basin and South Mineral Creek, San Juan Mountains, last August. I had to briefly scamble for cover and as I was wondering about a possible rainbow, a double popped up.

All single exposures, Lightroom processing.

ANY comments, observations and critique welcome. :wavey:

Wow! Cool rainbow! I really like number 1--what a dramatic sky!. I think #4 can be really nice too if you can boost the contrast in the background mountains a bit.

I really like #1, the lighting and colors all work great together. Great photo Bill :toast:

Very dramatic stuff, Bill. 1,3 and 4 are tremendous - #2 not so much because of the cutoff mountain in the BG. Great work and thanks for making us drool for summer when it's 8 degrees outside!

#1 gets my vote, although 3 and 4 are pretty sweet too. All really nice shots, Bill. Perhaps it's personal preference, but I wouldn't mind seeing the shadows in the trees a little lighter.

I really like #2 and $4. Both are spectacular. Thanks for sharing.

# 1 is killer! I love the way the rainbows and cloud in #1 seem to radiate from the high peaks. It's also sweet to feel like you can look both downhill and uphill in one photo. The way the line of the talus slope parallels the line of the shadow is a nice touch too. I also like #4 with the bright rainbow in front of shadow and the dark tree in front of the sunny slope. #2 I think works better if you crop off the top of the far mountain.

Wonderful images Bill! My favorite is #4. Really makes me look forward to warmer days.

Sweet! Number 1 and 4 are great, but #4 totally rocks! I wouldnt change a thing.

They all are great. Definitely crop the top on 2. What a great variation in what I would expect was very little time. You must have been moving at light speed.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions, everyone.

I'll see if I can squeeze a little more shadow detail out of the trees in #1.
But the local adjustments have already been pushed pretty far.
It's definitely in the territory of needing a separate exposure.

I am surprised that many of you like #4 so much! I value the feedback.

Yes, Morris, I was definitely shooting in panic mode, expecting the cloud cover to close before I could set up a tripod and compose anything.

Hard to pick a favorite, they're all excellent. It's amazing what views can be had from the road to Clear Lake.

All these shots are great, but that first one is absolutely killer, IMO. Its got it all with the rainbow, beautiful sky and magnificent backdrop. Lucky you to be able to take it all in!

Bill,

Great shots, #1 is my favorite also -- It gives the feeling that you captured it just as the rain was clearing. Can't wait for warmer days!

Guy, yes, I felt VERY lucky being in the right place at the right time, for a change.

Dave, it was still raining on me as the first shots were taken.

Todd, that was my first trip all the way up the road. Didn't know what I was missing!
The view up South Mineral Crk also got me to explore for more waterfalls upstream.

However, I wouldn't mind if the road was shut down at the mine adit below Crater Lake.
Having vehicles at the lake really detracts from that beautiful setting.

Not much else to add, I love the saturated colors in the rainbow in #4. Great job capitalizing on the timing!

I agree that they are all excellent, but #4 is my favorite of the bunch.

Pretty spectacular conditions Bill. They're all good images, but #1 really captures the drama of the moment. Awesome image.

Amazing, Bill! #1 is the one, I think. The double rainbow and sunlit peaks in the bkg are both amazing.
