Well, I finally found time to process one of my shots from Sprague on Saturday. It was a very different morning than what I have ever experienced for light and color.
C&C always welcome, and thanks for looking,

Love the pink glow here, Morris. I'm not sure about the stump in the FG. It's kind of dominant, and it looks like there may have been some interesting ice patterns that would have made for a better FG. Just a thought. Regardless, it's a lovely image!

Morris,
Good to see your images from the "pink glow sunrise". It is an interesting take on the morning, but I agree with Bret that the stump is the dominant feature. Not that the stump is bad. It might need a separate study on a return trip?
I have tried several choices with the stump and the dead tree, but all have received negative reviews regarding the leading lines. (I have put together one with ice only and it looks fairly good - a case where "less is more".) Did you shoot away from the stump when the color was strongest?
Also, without including more of the pink sky it looks like there could be a white balance issue. did you get more clouds in any of your captures? Try doing a pano or two? I can not recall all the details of our discussions that morning.

Well, it sure looks like quite a pink morning all around!
I kinda like the stump, if fact almost as much w/o the sky. It looks like options were somewhat limited as far as strong subjects go, after seeing several takes on this scene im almost tempted to say it might have been more fruitful to just shoot intimate scenes of the snow (or log!) Course, its easy to say that after the fact...Anyhow, overall i think this is pretty cool!

I like the composition and the stump is cool. However my eye is immediately drawn to the strong cyan fringing on the edge of the mountains (against the sky). Is that CA or some PP artifact? I would also suggest cropping off some of the bare ice at the bottom to bring the stump in tighter.

Bret, I should have tried just some ice lead-ins, but I didn't. The ice was a little soft, and I probably shouldn't have been where I was.
Steven, I have more of the sky in different comps I am still working on, I may have oversaturated the processing, but I think it looks a lot better with a black background. Do you notice how the white isn't doing this color any favors?
Thanks, Stan, the options are always limited with my lack of talent The color glow all around us was really special, and I guess we haven't managed to convey that yet.
Phillip, It probably is both CA from my lens, and I worked on balancing the tones in this image with brushing a mask from an adjusted for a better sky curves layer. I bet I got the brush to much into the sky about the hills.

That is some wild pink glow!

Wow! that pink glow is rather intriqueing. I agree with the above coments and I think that stump has potential. Dang, I wish I had gotten up early like I intended too!

I like the pink, but I love that stump. It's a worthy subject on its own and worth going back for.

That is an interesting comparison with how Paul shows the same stump. Nearly the same set-up, but just little more to the left. But Paul caught a really great low-level sky at sunrise (can you reset this one soon so we can try again?). The strong color/contrast in the lower sky and ice reflections helps to balance the image and move the eyes up and down between the two. In the posted image the stump dominates due to the lack of strong contrast with the clouds/mountains. Besides the interesting stump there isn't much else to draw my eyes around the frame.

Paul, that is one sweet shot. Definitely a better sky, and your comp is better balanced.

I realize the light was spectacular, but the strong red/magenta is really throwing me off. I would expect to see the bounced color bathe the highlights - and even the midtones - but pink shadows make me think the capture/processing is off somehow. Anyway, I believe that it's true - it just seems "off" to my eye. Different processing may or may not alter the results.

It had to be something to see in person.
