I'm heading to Vegas in mid April and will have 1 day to go to and shoot the South Rim. I'm staying in one of the lodges at GC.

So I'm gonna have a sunset shoot upon arrival and a sunrise shoot and some in between shoots before I head back to Nevada

any suggestions for the best locations given the limited time there? I've never been there so I'm kind of clueless.

Thanks

Michael,

Search is your friend here as I found several topics on this theme when I was looking at going. I think you can choose almost anywhere and have good locations. Some of the favorites are hopi, shoshone, and lipan points as well as desert view.

There is a nice write up in Photograph America newsletters (#93) about going to the south rim and where to shoot. I suggest that you order up that article ($10) as he goes through a lot of the points and where to shoot sunrise and sunset. It would be very helpful to somone who has never been to the south rim.

I would suggest:

Sunset at Mather Point.
Sunrise at Hopi Point.

Yavapai Point is also excellent for sunset - and go behind Bright Angel Lodge in the afternoon to see California condors.

I'd recommend Shoshone Point for sunrise/early morning. It's quiet and you'll likely have it all to yourself. You'll need to do some searching to find info on it, as it doesn't typically appear on most of the tourist information. But, it's a one-mile hike from road, relatively easy, but unmarked location...

In my opinion there is no ideal spot. Head to any close look out point that is easily accessable for your sunset shot. After that if you can check out other near by spots for your sunrise shot before it totally dark. The canyon is a beautiful place, even from the south rim with all the people & development.

Look at the NPS website for info on sunrise & sunset times.

Have fun.

One of my favorites for sunrise is Lipan Point.

Yaki point is great for both, but you'll need to catch a shuttle to get there. It's a short trip, but no parking..

Anyway. It's the Grand Canyon. Provided you find the rim, you're in luck. :toast:
