This morning's icy hand

This morning I woke up looked at the thermometer and noticed that it was 11 degrees which didn't sound too bad so I decided to head out into the mountains. It sure felt a lot colder though. I later learned that I mis-read the digital thermometer and missed the minus sign. Oops. We had lots of fresh powder from Bear Lake onwards, often thigh deep. Unfortunately, the clouds swallowed the rising sun and so I didn't have much to work with. I therefore headed up to Haiyaha to see what I could do with the ice. The winds were howling and it was chilly up there. I had three batteries with me, stored away deep in my clothing, but I only managed a few minutes of shooting before all of them died. My camera was coated in a thick layer of ice, my bag filled with snow just by opening it to get my camera out and I couldn't even think of opening my tripod. I just had to do what I could hand held through a mostly frozen viewfinder. Oh well, it was still great to be out to enjoy the beauty. Here are a few images. Some of the snow sculptures were very large in deep snow caves.

Love the ice "hand" above, very nice, it is something different to everybody I suspect. Seems a little UFO's ish to me.

Dude, you suck. You get more in a morning than I get in a season.

This is a fantastic abstract set. Excellent work Erik.

Man, the composition of these shots is absolutely stellar! Great insight to even think of them, too. You're the real deal, Erik.

This is a very nice set, the snow sculptures were a nice surprise.

I really wanted to head up to the park, but work called. #1 is stellar, Erik. I'm glad you toughed it out.

I really like the icy hand above. Perfect comp on this!

The cold, jaggedness of this image makes me think of the White Witch who froze Narnia.

An extraordinary study of intimate winter images!
The 'hand' is also my favorite, but #130 is a very close second.

Great shot! And I do see a lion's head, mane and all in the upper left and if you add the rest I can get a leaping lion out of it.

Conditions looked challenging, but you seem to excel regardless. Especially like that knife-edged hand.
Check out LensCoat products, they have neoprene body covers that would help protect your camera. Some completely cover the body for transport purposes, while others allow a lens to be attached. The latter, I bet, could be adapted with a strategic hole, or flap, cut here or there to actually use the camera in extreme conditions. Or else, you might try a waterproof cover designed for using gear in rainstorms.

Great stuff as always Mr. Stensland.

#1 blew my mind. Great work!

Really cool (literally). You framed this perfectly, the dark background really accentuates the icy "hand." I'm also a fan of #0129, the blue color is wonderful. Nice finds Erik.

oh dear I coudn't believe you went out in that weather, of course with me being sick all the time I don't think I could even if I wanted too

I love that hand, the hand looks to be a little frozen there, maybe you need to get it out of the cold and give it some hot cocoa

I also like 130 like it seems everyone else

Ha! All are nice, but the 'hand' (i also see a lion) is the clear winner! Looks like more boring, calm and warm weather is on its way next week, so hope you enjoyed that nice taste of winter

Erik, this is a great image. Like the saying goes:“it's in the details.”

Erik, I love the ice image too. However, my favorite is the two trees nearly covered by the snow. I love its simplicity. You are the best.
Dave Bartlett and I are heading up to RMNP tomorrow morning. We will stop by to say hello.
