Looking at the forecast for RMNP on Saturday Sunrise, its stable and partly cloudy, Low around 25, with a sunny afternoon and high in the mid 40's...
I have a fresh set of batteries and a new camera to break in... Will be driving up from Parker, plenty of room in the Pilot if anyone wants to ride along....
Anyone game?

Dave you have to pick one of the few weekends I'm heading out of town. Have fun and hope to catch you next time.
Where in Parker are you? I'm in Idyllwilde over by the new high school.

I am at the top of Willow Park -- about a 2-3 min drive from you :) Small World. Sure we will have more opportunities in the future ...

This is good to know, hope you plan future trips. I'm at Stroh Ranch.

Dan,
Where were you last weekend? I also live in Parker, and I'm not sure about Saturday yet. I will have to let you know tomorrow, if that's o.k.

Dave,
I Live up in Loveland but was planning on heading up to RMNP for sunrise as well on Saturday. Where abouts are you planning on going up there? I was think of hitting up Bear Lake or Dream Lake.

Morris -- Last Saturday Sunset I went to GOG -- Sunday I was lazy :) Tomorrow is fine -- if anything I am very flexible :)
Cynthia -- I plan on shooting often, and opening up and learning/teaching/interacting with others that share this passion is very appealing to me :) To date I have been mainly shooting alone, as my wife is usually busy doing other stuff, and I have 3 teenage daughters that sometimes will come out shooting with the "old man" -- but they are teenage girls, and I have stopped trying to figure them out long ago. So when I stumbled into here I am hoping this expands my limits some :)
Jim -- I have been to Bear Lake in the Summer, haven't yet been to Dream Lake... I am VERY open, and we could pick a meeting spot at say around 6-6:15 am -- which would give us plenty of time for a 7:15 sunrise :) Would I need to get snowshoes to get into Dream lake? How far of a hike is it?
Posted by Jim Casteel on January 29, 2009 at 1:16 PM
Dave,
The trail most of the time is good and no need for snow shoes but you might want to bring them just incase there was a bunch of snow since it was last hiked. You can tell from just off the parking lot if you will need them though. Nice hard packed snow most of the time. The hike took me a casual 45 minutes. I think the hike is 2 miles or something like that.
I will call the rangers station tomorrow and find out if I need snowshoes to make it to dream lake.

Conditions: On Tuesday there was deep snow on the way up to Dream Lake. Since then we've had very strong winds that have mostly scoured Estes of snow. My guess is that there will be hard pack interspersed with deep drifts. For early Saturday morning I highly recommend snowshoes. Sunday they probably won't be needed after all the Saturday visitors.

Looks like Saturday will be a nice sunny day. I'm trying to talk a friend of mine from the Springs into coming up with me. If not, we'll stay more local. I'll let you know if we think we'll be there.

Well now ya got me thinking about this. Listen to Erik's advice. Jamie I live in Monument.
John
Erik -- Thanks for the advice, RMNP is your "homefield" and its very much appreciated!
Jamie -- sounds good look forward to meeting you if you can make it.
Perhaps we can meet-up in the BeaverMeadows Visitor Center at 6am?
NOTE: I am a very casual snowshoer -- so lets adjust the times if we need to :)
Anyone wanna CarPool?

I might be able to make it up sat morning,
I'm swamped at work but I very much need some time in nature.
I'm in Johnstown so not too far of a drive. I'm thinking if Dream lake is on the agenda for actual sunrise? not sure if 6:15 is early enough. I think Dream lake is only a mile from the bear lake trailhead. Half mile to nymph then half mile to dream?

I don't think that 6:15 is early enough to meet in the Bear Lake parking lot. I would like to meet there a little before 6 because dawn is at 6:40 tomorrow. Kurt was right Dream Lake is only 1.1 miles from the trailhead.
Kurt If you would like I am going to Longmont to pick someone up on my way up if you would like to meet me in Longmont or Loveland we could carpool.
If anybody has any questions shoot me an email.

Jim,
I won't know if I'll be able to go till later tonight. Have you guys decided if your going to Dream lake or not?

It probably only takes Erik 15-20 minutes to do that Dream Lake trail, but if I haven't been hiking lately, it takes me closer to 40 minutes. It's not super steep, but it isn't anywhere near what one would call flat either. I think elevation gain is about 500-700 feet. Anyway, good luck on your outing, I'll be working.
The air quality this morning as I looked west was outstanding -- Subsidence as the high pushes in, visibility at least down here was great! This should be a great trip in the morning! If the wind lightens up some it could be ideal :)
So we have a decent forecast...
The Solar Data is: The following information is provided for Dream Lake (longitude W105.5, latitude N40.4):
Saturday

End civil twilight 17:49

The Destination appears to be Dream Lake
Anyone else wanting to join in, lets meet at 5:40 in the Bear Lake Parking Lot -- the hike is about 1.1 miles, so even for us old slow guys, we should be able to hit first light. According to Erik, snowshoes may be needed (I will be bringing a pair). I will be in a Black Honda Pilot, leaving Parker around 3am 'ish. E-Mail me if you want a ride, or need to get picked up -- plenty of room, may have one of my daughters with me. Anyone else thats going drop a E-mail, and we can exchange cell numbers to coordinate if needed.
I may run into some of you. I'll probably be up at Haiyaha for sunrise tomorrow and will then have to hurry back to clean up and open my gallery. Depending on the route I take back down, I may see some of you at Dream Lake or further down the trail. I'm hoping that tomorrow will give us some decent weather.

Went up to RMNP (Bear Lake) this morning. The wind was gusting to where it was hard to stand . Went back down to Horseshoe and took some shots of Bull Elk. There were 12 bulls a couple of large ones together all feeding and taking their time. The light was great the wind finally died down around 10:30.
Don,
Thanks for the update -- The winds are forecast to calm down a bit -- hoping that tomorrow mornings isn't quite so bad -- Time will tell :)
