Mtn Baring Sunset
I took this photo coming back from Seattle a week ago. You can see this mountain from Hwy 2 a couple miles east of Index. I was hoping for more color in the clouds but it just didn't happen. The sun hit the mountain in time to get a two shots and then the clouds closed in. I would appreciate any critque and thoughts.

Canon 100-400 L IS lens with polarizer

Great looking peak! It looks a bit noisy/soft, and there are some spot of sensor dust that could be cleaned up. Other than that little stuff my only suggetion would be to either put a GND over the sky and peaks or to bracket exposures and blend in some shadow detail in the trees. Maybe try a different crop as well, something that places the peaks in the top third of the frame. Hope that helps a little! :toast:

Thanks Ryan, One of the reasons I joined this forum is to become a better photographer and with the help from all of you that respond with excellent suggestions like this will be a means to an end.

No problem Roger. Oh, and it's never an end... There's always more to learn and experiment with in photography, that's why it's so great!

That peak is very cool, and I like the way you've stacked the three layers. I'll also echo Ryan's other comments. This looks like a scene worth revisiting.

I'll echo the other comments and suggest you crop off about 1/3 of the sky to emphasize the peak.

Yep, good suggestions. A fine shot with the tip of the peak so brilliant. The crop will place it in an eye-catching spot. What Ryan said about bracketed exposures: if you forget to do it in the field, try double processing the image in your Raw conversion. Some color or detail in the trees would be nice and can be brought out that way.

Ditto, especially the crop. :o)

lots of noise in this image...the foreground is too black and could use a crop, but the sky and mountain are really nice...just need some noise reduction!

From a technical standpoint, the dust spots, softness (needs additional sharpening for web) and noise are all issues for me. There shouldn't have been noise given your equipment unless a very high ISO was used or there was too much processing adjustment. The lack of detail in the trees isn't a big problem IMO, as those intense whites steal the show anyway. The composition is a bit too strait-forward for my taste, but nothing wrong with it either. I know options near the road are limited.
