Where Else but the Dunes?
Why go anywhere else on my token day off (Wed)? I mean, how amazing is it that one can drive to one of the most incredible spots in N America, and not see a single person or even car all day (must have been the sub-zero windchills that kept the January tourists away  )?
Well, besides a slight concern for frostbite, i couldnt have been happier with a few miles of hiking into the southern Dune mass. Here's one from 15 min after sunset (3s at f/16, 2 exp blend)
Comments and Critique most welcome!

Here's 20 minnutes after sunset, looking north (8s)

Back a bit, a bitbefore sunset, for a closer look at the wind-swept dunes! The wind was quite biting, to say the least!

one more, a broad view of the southern Dunes looking NW. More at ESS today, and all next week!

I really envy how often you get to the dunes, Stan. For me, it's once every few years. I'd like to see a little more detail in the sand in #1, but I love the colors. The purple hues contrasting with the orange in the sky is really nice. #2 is a pretty shot, but I like all the other ones better. The lighting and abstract nature of #3 is screaming B&W for me. The patterns of shadow and light are wonderful. Great eye on this one. #4 is brain-meltingly beautiful! Your comp is superb, and the lighting, detail, and colors are mesmerizing to me. My one nit on this one is the distracting branch on the right side, about dead center between top and bottom. I'm also playing with a tiny crop of sky, but I don't think it's necessary. You sure came away with some great stuff, Stan. I'm looking forward to more. :toast:

Stan,
Great Shots! Everyone of them is a winner. I love the deep purple in the first image, the light in the second, the composition and the details provided by the wind in the third and everything about the last shot.
Nice work.

Hey Stan, awesome photographs, I love the contrast of the purple and orange in #1, and the last one has it all going on  I like the other two too but the first one and last are my favorites. :toast:

These are some beautiful images. I like the first and last best, but wouldn't mind having any one of them hanging on my wall. I'm going to have to get to the dunes one of these days.

Your last one is my favorite. Great composition and light.
I'm a sucker for those wide angle shots with great sand texture in the foreground.

You might want to consider Paul's suggestion of taking a little off the top. I like it better that way, but that's a very subjective call.

Nice photos Stan! Numbers 1 and 4 are awesome! Great light and textures. Did you know you are visible from space?

Wonderful images Stan! I really like the mono-chromatic sand color in #1. It does look biting cold there.

Thanks guys! Phillip--that is almost exactly where these shots were taken! We are all just dust in the wind anyways...
Paul--you were right about #1; i dodged the fg a bit and it looks much better--thanks!!

Great job, always inspires me to head down there, though I dont near as often as you! Once or twice a year is my average!

Stan, 3 and 4 get my vote. Comments are positive. Like the lines. In 4 I like the glimpse of the mountain peaks to give perspective and sense of place.

A very nice series from the STAN Dunes....

1, 3, 4 are outstanding and I love the abstract feel of 3.

Great series Stan.

#2 seems pretty flat - but such is the light at that time. #4 is my favorite. I'd reduce the electrablue a bit though. It's distracting, at least on my monitor. The color combo in #1 is really nice.

Stan, I think eveyone of these are excellent! I love the first one and the purple tint in the sand. I love the contrast between the sand and the mountain in the second image. I love the shadow in the third image and how it bisects the pyramid shaped dune and I love the wind blown texture in the fourth image and the brilliant Colorado blue sky. Just terrific work! :toast:

The color in #1 is unbelievable. The others are very good, too.
