Some of us have discussed a trip out to Hatteras on the 3rd weekend in Feb., which would be 2/21. The plan being to leave the Raleigh-Durham area soon enough to get a sunset shot of Bodie Island Lighthouse, or that general area, then sleep overnight in cars/tents/whatever, then get the sunrise at Hatteras Point on Sunday 2/22.
There's a ton of stuff to photograph all up and down Hwy 12 out there, so if one scene doesn't work for us, we will find something that does. There are big sand dunes about 20 miles N of Hatteras and the Hatteras Lighthouse as well.
I'm thinking we leave the RDU area somewhere around noon-noon:30 (maybe after we meet for an early lunch somewhere?), then caravan out to the Outer Banks for the sunset shot at, or near Bodie Island Lighthouse.
Thoughts? Who can make it that weekend?

Well it looks like I won't be able to make that weekend. My Cali trip had been moved up where I will have to leave that weekend. I could do the 2nd, 3rd or 4th weekend in March?

I'm happy to try for something later in March. I have already got this trip (2/21-2/22) pretty well carved in stone, however, and am going to go. :) Hopefully some of the other Raleigh folks can go as well.
If we get into late March, I am more inclined to see what's up in the Mountains than the beach, though.
Others' thoughts?

Well...work always seems to get in the way of life.
I can't make this weekend (2/21-2/22) due to customer commitments for a production system deployment.
Let's brainstorm some more for another date after 2/26.

Well crap!! I'm going to be in Fayetteville, NC the preceding week and was trying to figure out how to meet up with you guys that Saturday. I've never been to Outer Banks, so I may go anyway Any pointers?

Yes. I would plan on lots of time spent getting there. :)
But, once there, anything along Hwy 12 from where Hwy 64 intersects with it, and south is great shooting, IMO. You've got Pea Island NWR, Bodie Island Lighthouse, then Hatteras Lighthouse and Hatteras Point farther down. If you plan on doing the ferry thing, I'd stop and ask locals the best way to go. I've never done the ferry rides.

The Ferry is definately the way to go if coming from the south. You should call ahead for reservation just in case.
