I bought PSE7 a few months ago and just last week decided to upgrade to CS4. It arrived today and I'm excited, but very very intimidated and LOST. I have never even seen PS at work and need help to figure out where to start learning how to use this powerful tool.
Does anyone have any recommendations for instructional books? I admit I'm not a very technical person and prefer something with language that the "common man" can understand rather than something that requires a degree in computer science. Something with visual instructions/diagrams would also be a big help. I learn better if I can see it rather than just read about it. Thanks in advance for your help.

Two of the best books out now for photographers who want to learn how to use Photoshop are Scott Kelby's 'The Adobe CS4 Book for Digital Photographers' and Martin Evening's 'Photoshop CS4 for Photographers'.
Neither book is written in techno-speak.
There are lots of folks here who are helpful and knowledgeable about PS willing to help out....no question is too trivial!
Did you take advantage of that $299 upgrade offer?
John, as a matter of fact I did! I wasn't planning to buy it until maybe next year, but the deal was just too good to pass up Thanks for the tip.

Kelby also has a book for CS3 in which he teaches a 7 point system. Check it out as it will help you cut through to the important tools and techniques that you will probably use most frequently.

I just upgraded from ELements to CS4 too, Angela! I bought the Oreilly book as a reference, but i doubt ill use it much, really it seems like there's only a few big differences to get used to. What i do wanna know though is what happened to the stinkin' Selection Brush?? If CS did away with this that would be a lousy shame!

You got the Quick Selection tool instead of the Selection Brush to 'paint' a selection, Stan.
Here's some tips to help you get started.
