This issue has been known for a while although it may not have been public. It almost always occurs in tropical climates which seems to affect the adhesive. It hardly ever happens otherwise.

I did notice that not many people have ever complained about this. I think I heard ONE. Good to know that Canon will make good if it does pop off.

Any guess on whether Canon will throw in a free calibration at the same time?

This happened to one of my 5d bodies. Quite unnerving. And I live in a very dry climate. It's more common than you might believe - my research told me (after my mirror shockingly fell into my hands one day). Awhile back, I had an interesting "unofficial" chat with a great Canon support guy - who probably revealed more than he should have. I'm surprised the notice is just coming out now. If you have a 5d, you should be prepared for this possible adhesive failure - in time. Canon was great about fixing mine, free and fast. "Repair and reinforce" simply means re-gluing the mirror back in place.
FYI - the 5d2 features new clips that help secure the mirror.

Frustrating. I wonder if Canon will fix it BEFORE the problem happens. I emailed the girl who bought my 5D to let her know. I sure hope they used better glue in the 5D2! (added later: I just saw your note about the 5D2's clips).
BTW Jesse, I visited your site. Not sure what I like more, your photo work or your website design! WOW, great work in both areas.
