I will be in the Endless Mountains region of northeast Pennsylvania in about 10 days. I've only been there in fall and would love some suggestions for possible locations for this time of year. I'm assuming that Ricketts Glen will be closed except at ground level.
Is the Pennsylvania "Grand Canyon" a must see?
Thanks in advance.

Dotty

Eagles Mere, and the toboggan ride is open. Worlds End State Park is very scenic in the winter.
If you head over to the Grand Canyon area, check out Hyners View, too. Sharon

Sharon,

Thanks. We're staying in Towanda & I hear that it's 1 hour + to Canyon area. Not a problem but they sure could use some fresh snow...hopefully soon. Frozen waterfalls are everywhere I'm told.

I would pass on the Grand Canyon. If you have the time and want a great Day Trip take the drive down Route 6 and head west out of Towanda and head to Kinzua Bridge State Park. The Gorge there is better than the "Grand Canyon" and it has the remains of a very cool looking bridge that at one time was the largest in the world. Sadly a tornado knocked down most of it a few years back but what is still there is very photogenic.

Route 6 is very photogenic and has many wonderful small towns and mountain vistas. I live here so if you have any specific questions or want info on places to shoot or eat let me know

Dotty, we have a home in Sullivan County, but won't be up there then. I like just getting in the car and "getting lost". The Endless Mtns are beautiful, and sometimes I'll stop and then go "No, it's just a little more beautiful up there!" Just make sure you've got 4WD, because when they say No Winter maintenance, they mean it!

The Grand Canyon is a "must see" IMHO, as is the Pine Creek drive from Jersey Shore up Route 44 to Waterville and then Route 414 through Jersey Mills to Blackwell and Morris. A 4 mile side trip at Waterville to Little Pine State Park and the Bald Eagle Watch is also worthwhile.

I am a VERY amateur photographer but here is my simple website with a few pictures from the Little Pine Creek State Park in January 2008.

My high school class (Jersey Shore, PA Class of 1960) is selling a DVD as a fund raising device for a permanent scholorship fund for our school. The DVD runs 40 minutes and contains over 400 photos of the 62-mile Pine Creek Rail Trail and a raft ride through the canyon. It is available at the Country Stores along Pine Creek and otherwise. It was done by this same amateur photographer with a Canon S400 for the majority of shots.

As a reference for future trips here is an article you might want to read:

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/travel/pennsylvania.html

I particularly like the first paragraph from the article:

"North-central Pennsylvania is a bona fide, 21st-century Eden. Or so says the Wildlife Conservation Society's Human Footprint report, which put the rugged woodlands on par with Brazil's Pantanal and China's Gobi as one of the last untarnished tracts on Earth. Only 1.3 percent of the lower 48 is as pure."

Well, as I suspected, this was a total dud. NO SNOW anywhere (same as in the Catskills a few weeks ago). Everything was grey & no ice falls either. Only place we found decent subjects were at Childs Park. Now I know why we go to Vermont & Adirondacks so much. :( :x
