Well, it is winter, the right season for the topic of “Winterscapes”. Time to pull out images of cold mornings, blue skies, and fresh snow...or lack thereof!

Yeah, me first! I took this one in South Park one very chilly/windy morning. There was some nice light filtering through the stand of aspens. It added some warmth to an otherwise frigid landscape. I also liked the lone pine holding the stand up on the end.

OK here is December down below the mountains, frost and fog.

A shot from last week, in Yellowstone's Lamar Valley. Couldn't have asked for a better sky. And plenty of fresh snow helps simplify the image.

Whodathunkit? A winterscape sans snow.

Owl Canyon (Larimer County CO, not San Juan County UT) winter 1991-92; Mamiya 24 TLR

My contribution was taken a couple of winters ago when we had plenty of snow.

Woah, Jesse! Surreal, abstract, disorienting ...what an image! I really like it.

Thought I'd post a fun one. Behind that tree is a several thousand foot drop in to the Grand Canyon. I swear it is! It's fun to walk in 3 feet of snow and be unsure of exactly where it is you'll slide off and fall. It looked like this for days.

Oh right, this is sunrise. :toast:

Jemez River winter morning. Nikon F100, 35-70 f2.8 lens, Fuji Velvia

Nice shot, Jim! Is it an older image, or do you still have a chemical dependency like me? (I abuse film)

I have a few variations of this I keep working on even though it was taken a couple of years ago. I'll either get it right or have fun trying. Crop from 4X5.

Some of you may have seen this already, but I think it's my best winter shot. Taken at Mayflower Gulch.
Posted by Todd Caudle on February 10, 2009 at 12:21 AM
Hey Pelzmann, are those gold leaves I see on the aspens in that "winter" shot?
Posted by Bill Pelzmann on February 10, 2009 at 4:11 AM
No, Todd, you are optically deluded.
The aspens had lost all their leaves by Dec 22.
I'd sure love to be in the area during an early snow.

Another fine group of images shaping up here!

Here's one from a snowy and solitude filled day at Roxborough.

Very nice image Dave, I really like the perspective and scale.
Posted by Erik Aagaard on February 16, 2009 at 3:13 PM
This was taken one cold February morning. Apparently there used to be a house at the end of these trees years ago; there was an open field when I took this. Now there's a a credit union there. :frown:

I knew I would love this month's display. Great work here everyone. Dave, that is one of my new Showalter favorites. Killer comp.

Morris the color is great in your Clinton Creek photo. And Bob that Roxborough shot looks super, but very COLD. BRRRR!

Pine tree in Ute Valley Park. 4X5 TMX developed in D-76 in my kitchen sink. Shot with a Fuji 210 -NW at f11 or f16.

I got to thinking that my post is a very "mini"-scape. Maybe I should replace it with a more all-inclusive "scape"!!
Posted by David Bartlett _CO on February 18, 2009 at 7:35 PM
This is the original all-inclusive view of Hallett Peak as shot from Sprague Lake, RMNP. Crops of this were posted earlier.

Hope this works for the winter theme.

OK I found one that I think is good enough... from a FREEZING morning in RMNP....

Posted by Don Eason on February 19, 2009 at 3:21 PM
Linnet, I would consider your beautiful, elemental comp an "intimate landscape". Please don't replace it. But if you also have some broader views to share, by all means post them!

This is from my backpacking trip last winter. My favorite mountain from all. By far.

Here is my contribution. Taken in Dec. 2008 near my home (Sheridan, MT)
Posted by Rod Chandler on February 20, 2009 at 5:54 PM
My contribution is from 9-miles north of Baker City, OR, January 15, 09. The temperature was about 10 above zero and the fog was lifting as the sun appeared. I grew up in nearby La Grande so I know the area pretty well and headed straight for this slow moving stretch of the Powder River.

Great winter pictures!

This was taken west of Denver at Mt. Falcon open space park some years back with a Mamiya RB67 on Fuji Velvia.

Nice shots everyone. This was from a couple of years ago outside of Buena Vista.

Taken in January in the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone on a below zero ice foggy morning. This is my 1st image post here. Fabulous images everyone.

I'll try to sneak this one in. It is actually from June this past year. I was camping near Independence Pass when I awoke to the fresh snow. Made a mad dash for the Bells as I realized it was going to disappear quickly. Shared this scene with only one other person that morning. Thirty minutes later the wind kicked up and the clouds moved in and you couldn't even see the peaks. I love Colorado weather!

Here is a "closer" look at Colorado winter. This is a close up of the iced over Zapata Falls (Great Sand Dunes NP) near Alamosa, CO a few weeks ago. What an incredible spot!

I'm a little late to this theme, but here is my idea of the perfect winterscape...or perhaps I should say winter-escape!
Posted by Erik Stensland on March 4, 2009 at 1:20 PM
Here's one from last night, about 40 minutes after sunset. Nothing too special but it felt like winter. This is Hallett's Peak on top of the Continental Divide.
