I thought that title would grab your attention.

I actually got my hands on a spare LP-E6 battery. I ordered it from AbesOfMaine.com in mid-January, and it showed up Monday totally to my surprise. Every website seems to say out of stock (even them when I ordered it, they just said Pre-Order It). So it might be worth placing the order and see what happens. Just like with B&H, it cost $79.95 with free shipping. If the price is higher, check back. The prices seem to bounce like Wall Street.

Now, if other folks have been aquiring these around the country and I'm late on this info (not surprisingly!), then please disregard this service announcement.

I ordered one from Badger Graphic in Wisconsin and got it within a couple of days.

Hmmmmm, maybe they're not so rare now. That'd be nice!

I ordered one in January from Adorama and it got here yesterday. The rep said they mail them out from Canon to each store in batches of @500 so they are almost always filling backorders and not "in stock" but that was January. maybe they caught up with themselves.

My wife ordered one for me from BUYDIG for my birthday. She ordered it on Wednesday and it was at my house on Friday. So I know they have them or had them.

I can appreciate the problem. I had the same issue with the battery for my LX3 and there aren't many third party options. It took a while before B&H had them, but I found a pretty new one used at the same time for a little less.

$79 for a little Li-ion battery is bordering on the absurd though.

And Guy's recommendation of looking at Badger Graphic is a good one. They are one of my favorite camera shops. Others I've heard are worth checking but aren't mentioned here are MPEX, Calumet and Canoga.

Thanks for listing the other stores... good to know about these places.

Yeah, $79 is high... I had gotten batteries for my old 5D for nearly half that. The battery technology on the 5D2, I admit, is pretty up there. I didn't know a battery could hold this much info! Just for kicks, here's Canon's article on it. (It sometimes doesn't load, just hit refresh until it appears)
