The last two visits to NZ and I didnt see one of these weird little waders. Its beak only bends to the right. So was pleased to met up with a few this time. 1d2n sigma 500

This is a difficult one, as my first thoughts were, “This needs to be a vertical”, but then I think the foreground would come into play. Then again a higher viewpoint might help to illustrate even better the wonky bill, using the chest/belly as its background.

What were your settings and support ??

Not a wader that I knew even existed, so a real pleasure to see. Not quite a trip to the local park, but now you know where they are.

Looking at those legs it looks like it is a “runner”, and I think you did very well here, as it is an excellent little shot, bet you get comments re cropping left & right, but that’s personal.

Just to be utterly predictable, I do think a portrait format would have suited this subject better - but it is always easy to say that after the event. A slight lift in the levels might also give the shot a little more punch. A head on shot is dead right, it emphasises the curve in the bill that gives the bird its name. All in all though, a lovely shot of a species I would dearly like to see.

Not a species I've seen before (even in pictures) and this is a very nice shot. The BG is spot on although it may be helped by decentralising the bird a bit (bit off one side perhaps?). The only downside is the mud on the bill (not that you can do anything about that!) that means it merges in with the plumage a bit
