A quick query, I was wondering whether it is possible to use a Sigma teleconverter with a Canon lens or visa versa, for example a Sigma 1.4x converter with a Canon 100-400mm.
Does anyone have any experience of a set up similar to this, if it work how good is it? Is the picture quality good?

Hi Chris,
I use a Sigma Apo x1.4 non DG, with my Canon 400mm F5.6L a lot. I think its very good, I posted a wren shot a recently where I used it. I get very sharp results. The Canon may be slightly better.

I use teleconerters a lot - x1.4 and x2. A very important factor is how good the prime lens is - it needs to be razor sharp (the best lens have sharpness in reserve). I have no experience of the Cannon 100-400 mm.

Hi Chris,
I have a 100-400 which I use a lot and am very happy with the sharpness of the images I get from it. Put on a canon x1.4 and Frederic is absolutely correct, the image quality becomes rubbish. I've never achieved a truly sharp image with the convertor on it and if Canon's convertor won't do it, I wouldn't expect a sigma to be a lot better.

Thats quite disappointing, I would have though the lens would still function well with a converter. I'm too poor to afford a large prime lens, damn being a student.
Thats good too know though that you can mix and match the make of converters and lenses, super image of the wren by the way John.

Hello Chris, I've used both Canon and Sigma 1.4 extenders on my prime 500 sigma and had great results from both. I've also used the Sigma 1.4x on a Sigma 100-300 f4 EX with excellent results. I've not tried the Canon 100-400 but I have heard plenty of people with the same view as above ie. not favourable at all.
