In mid-January I was shooting snow-scenes in NE Oregon looking toward the Eagle Caps Wilderness Area. I spotted some quail huddled against the cold and managed to fire off some shots before they flew. To my delight, the birds flushed as I made the last exposure. Nikon D2xs - Tamron 200-500mm at 500mm (tripod mounted). Shot at f/6.3 - 1/3200 second and ISO at 400.

Great catch!
If you have the pixels, you might consider cropping and isolating the top bird.
He really stands out from the rest!

Very unusual capture certainly not the run of the mill. Slightly soft but to be expected with the conditions. Like the compositon where you caught them on the ground, taking off, and in the air. The catch light on the bird in flight certainly adds to it.

This is great, Rod. Perfect timing to capture 3 birds doing 3 different things. I like the triangular positioning of the birds too. My only nit is that it's a bit soft, but the shot is impressive enough IMO that that's a small thing. Great work!
