Darwin....
Just a little bit of useless information, today is the 200th aniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin.... I believe it is officialy being called Darwin Day (don't get a day off though), The portrait by the way is by Julia Margaret Cameron

RESPECT TO THE BIG MAN...! Forefather of all that is Natural History & Evolution. We have learnt so much and continue push the boundaries in the world of natural science, mostly thanks to the pure genius of people like Darwin. Long may he rest in peace..

Thanks for reminding us all Phil.

ditto what Brett said, except maybe the first bit, heard on the radio this morning that the Galapagos is suffering from too much ecotourism

CD is forefather of evolution, but not natural history, I would vote for Gilbert White as one of the instigators of natural history as we know it from his studies splitting chiffchaff from willow warbler - about 100 years before the great man studied the Galapogus mockingbirds.....

Both men have a lot to answer for as their studies resulted in the evolution of homio sapiens ssp twitcheritus

.... Yeah Yeah Yeah..! There was a lot more to the man than just the Galapagos, it's just that's what he's most famous for.. We could debate about historical scholars such as Aristotle, Thales and Plato and their views on Natural Philosophy, or Nicholas Copernicus, Galileo Galilei on Natrual Sciences, or Carolus Linnaeus and George Buffon on Natural History and then even the contemporary views of people like Aldo Leopold, Michael Soule and Edward O. Wilson... All of which have significant roles in our understanding of the world around us and the development of Natural History and Conservation.

So how far and how many people do we include and who do we think has had the most influence on natural science as a whole..? Interesting discussion but still wish to pay my respects to Charles Darwin.

Cheers,

Brett  :toast:

That's right Brett, there's a lot more to know about CD, and I'm waiting to see if the puppets in mainstream (ie David Attenborough) will discuss. Here's a taster:
CD was not a scientist yet his work was used to hijack scientific thought.
CD believed God created human beings (until on his death bed years after his novel - but this may not be true)
The word "evolution" didn't appear until the 6th edition of OoS.. and "survival of the fittest" until the 4th.
Both of these ideas were plagiarised from his contemporaries such as Edgar Wallace and Herbert Spencer who were not so well connected to the inner sanctum of the once Lunar Society (an occult club), later named the Royal Society.

As always, the matrix controls all.

Hope this isn't too controversial Tom?

Dave

Maybe a topic for another forum me thinks.. as it's not anything about Nature Photography or critiquing images.. So maybe we should stop there..?

Didn't mean to start a major discussion on Darwinism etc... I just wanted to point out that it was 200yrs since his birth.....

Could we please leave the controversy for a more suitable forum.... Ta

Drat.. Brett beat me to it

And Darwin was pretty good on worms !
He certainly was an inspiration to me as a youngster but maybe I didn't realise it at the time

Did you know Charles Darwin has the same birthday as Abraham Lincoln?

See Nick, there is something better to celebrate!

Dave

PS forgot to say Phil, nice photo, looking out of frame too quickly though. Couldn't you get rid of some of that noise also?

a very poignant moment i thought in the recent program on the beeb where attenborough was stoob by his statue, good bit of camera work maybe, but the two men would probably not have been so great without each other albeit many generations apart.

also.....don't believe a word of it that tourism is damaging the galapagos. it's down to the dismal failure of the ecuadorean government to control indigenous migration from the mainland. you can't seriously tell me that now over 20,000 permanent residents have less of an impact than even lots and lots of tourists traipsing along very well controlled and tiny percentage of land area paths. not to mention foreign longliners pillaging the waters....ok ok....im off to the hot topics forum

It would be interesting to have Mr Darwin around today.

He certainly woke people up to the lies that were being spouted to them from the pulpits.
I wonder if he could do the same to silence the lies that tax us in the name of climate change bills.
