I thought I would share my latest photo adventure with you since I am still reeling from the experience.

I went out early yesterday morning before dawn to do some night shots. The rain had stopped. But once I arrived it started raining again hard. When it finally let up I made a mad dash in the dark to the coast. What followed was one of the most beautful mornings I have had since moving to the area. Here are some of the shots I just processed last night (sorry I can't embed an image since I am limited to one/week):

The only light is the moon here:

One of the many colorful sunrise images:

Then it happended! A rainbow emerged over the rocks:

And then a full double rainbow appeared righ before another wave of heavy rain!!!

And it was better in person. I actually saw at least 6 different rainbows before going into work.  The funny thing is it all started out by sitting in my car in the dark thinking I had gotten Skunked.

Wow. That is the best rainbow over ocean I have ever seen! How lucky of you! I'm jealous

Those photos were truly magnificant. I kept thinking how fortunate you were to be able to not only see something so beautiful, but to be able to capture it the way you did. Fantastic!

I couldn't get the last link to work. Can you repost it?

Thanks guys! I am still in a bit of shock from the whole scene. It was definately surreal when the bow emerged and then became a full double rainbow... When I am out shooting and things like this occur it is like the heavens parted - a true God moment for me.

The last one shows the double bow a little better here:

Derek, all these are wonderful for various reasons. Although the first is slightly dark, it is just super IMO. I also like the clouds in the second image too, there the light was even better being more even. Your last post of the double rainbow here is the best of that group IMO. I would mention that in that series I did see one spot in the sky between the two arches, so be sure to clone that out before printing anything. A very nice series and I'm sure it was a great event to be out there for.... :toast:

Nice way to spend the morning before going to work. I like the first dark on the best too.

Awesome Derek. These are among the best, if not the best, of your Big Sur images I've seen. All of them show unique lighting conditions, but my favorite has to be the final one. The colors of the ocean and the double rainbow are truly splendid. Definitely not a bad way to start a day.

All beautiful shots Derek. Really like the full rainbow. Great progression of different light conditions too.

The colors in the last are fantastic and the full rainbow in the 4th is awesome!!!

Thanks guys, It was quite an unexpected rewarding time as my original focus was to experiment with night shots, clouds and a full moon. What happened after was just an f8 and be there kinda thing. This weather has certainly been helpful in providing more interesting light and patterns that is for sure.

Steve, I particularly like the colors in the last as well because it showcases what I love about Big Sur - the many shades of blue the ocean has which is great to see. I must also mention that while the colors and light were changing super fast I decide to lean more toward blues in the last shot vs. more of a neutral grey in the full rainbow shot. So I may go back and give that one a second look with a stronger blue white balance.

Wow! That's what you get for hanging out outside in bad weather.

I'm not sold for your photos except for the full 1/2 rainbow. Most shots are nice and technically well done, but not original enough to feel special to me.

Talk about a prolific morning of shooting! The change in light, colors and events that occurred throughout the morning is wonderful. I can see a few vertical crops that would work very nice too. Very nice!
