I have just received my new old EOS 1 ;-). I put in a 24-exp-film and went out shooting. After 11 pix, the camera automatically started to rewind. I did not accidentally hit the rewind-button.
Gerry, I would not presume to know anything about the issue exactly. However, is there any idea here on what makes the camera normally rewind the film? I'm coming from a world of all my hardware being totally non-automated and totally mechanical. So basically, is it the film counter that triggers this, or maybe something on the end of the film leader? If it is normally triggered off something on the end of the film leader maybe there is an item in the spooling area that has debris in the way. Just a SWAG on my part. If it is totally automated maybe it is something in the electronics then. But, it might be worth a try to look at the spooling area and the very end of an old film leader after the last exposure. Is there a hole or slot on the end of the film that the camera picks up.
My thought of looking at the end of the film is, how does the camera know to auto rewind between 24 or 36 shots? If it takes that info directly off the cannister scanner details then it would be the electonics I would think. Good luck.
Gerry from what you wrote its the old problem of LOW BATTERY'S there is not enough power to carry on winding the film it's as if its at the end'
so the camera reacts to this and rewinds.
Checking the batterys when they are not in use will probaby show them pretty strong Take a few picks quickly and then you will see they have nothing left in them
You need to give it a good sharp whack against a table. If that don't fix it, bring it in to a camera store, and they will either repair it or sell you a digi camera.
I tried again today and the counter went above 12 this time. When I extracted the film yesterday I noticed a little clip of paper or something in the film-holder. could have been the reason why... But I will check again next week.
Gerry, it might be worth wasting one roll of film just to exercise the unit in the comfort of your home. I would just take one roll and work the unit until some obvious things are eliminated and maybe something not so obvious comes up. In some cases it just takes working a pattern or sequence until you find the exact cause. If the film rolls back into the cannister I would think you could open one end and fish it back out for yet another try. Hopefully the item you found in the spooling area was the issue. I had mentioned some possible debris in the spooling area earlier, but who knows.

You might also set the custom function to leave the film tab out when it rewinds (I do this on my EOS 3) while you try to figure out this problem. Then cycle the same roll through a few times on manual exp with the cap on and see what it does. DX film will encode whether a roll is 12, 24 or 36exp and I'm sure the EOS1 will read this info.

is the cam broken? How to fix?
Thanks a lot!

Battery is not the problem. I have bought it last week and took only those 10 pix....
Thanks a lot!
