I snapped this with my Minolta Autocord TLR last year. The wind was REALLY strong. Does anyone know what time of the year the flowers peak in the desert at Shiprock?

Thanks

May is when they look their very best. Looks like your timing was good.

Well it was a total accident! Can you catch any still moments in the wee morning hours with no or little wind? I would like to go back and spend a few days out there so this information would be helpful. :toast:

Thanks Christopher! I only shot a couple of rolls of 6x6 on that trip and I must say that I am regretting it. :-(

Spring winds in the desert are tough to predict. Best light and best chances for calm are in the early morning.
Unfortunately, there are no motels in Shiprock (yet), so you'll need to drive in from Farmington, where cheap motels abound.

I shot most of the trip with a kodak dslr and i cant figure out how to punch up the color in those files to match my slides for the life of me.

This is a cool looking landscape!. If yuo do get back down there in Spring, this would look awesome with some better light on Shiprock, and with those wilflowers in the fg again!.

This is great. You don't see shots of shiprock with flowers all that often.

I ditto what Nick says. Better light and no wind and this will be a killer. Maybe move the horizon up a touch closer to thirds.

Better light could improve this, but I think it's a great image just as it is. Love the sky.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I need to look into planning a long weekend trip to NM so I can try this again during the peak flower season. This shot was taken a few hours before sundown and we moved on to find a better vantage point. In hindsight we should have stayed where we were at for a bit. Once I am done there I want to go try Bisti for a bit.

You got me thinking of paying this area a visit this spring. A neat shot even though the light wasn't optimal.

Like I indicated I want to go back. I would even like to meet some fellow photographers there. I looked up other pictures of shiprock with wild flowers and all I saw was yellow. I really like the variation of color so maybe I can get some local reports and just run out there one weekend. It is a heck of a trip for me for just one photo though :-) .
