I'm looking at going to Sheffield for university and was wondering about the wildlife photography opportunities in or near the city. I don't want too have to stop my photography because of the location of the good universities.

So are the moors as there is a direct train to Hathersage/Grindleford from Sheffield and then a shuttle bus to the top car parks. I think the bus runs throughout the year.

There are a good number of forumites that are based in and around the peak, myself included.

Excellent, so judging by the results i've seen on here, theres plenty of opps. Generally wildlife wise what is there too be found on the moors? Where are some good spots to go?

The moors (contrary to how they look) are a ever changing expanse with wildlife moving around in quite a large area.

There are some parts of the moor were you have a better chance of finding Mountain Hare, Grouse but these are based on the 'life cycle' of the moor, its substrate and current weather conditions so its hard to point anybody anywhere in advance. It really is a place where knowledge of the ecology of the subject/habitat, then some field craft, counts more than any equipment/lens combination.

For example Stanage Popular Edge (the middle of it) was a very good place for grouse but it has not be burnt for years and the heather is now tall hence most of the grouse that where resident there have moved towards 'Stanage End'; that said if the wind is up they are to be found lower down in the lea on Bamford Moor unless the prevailing wind is from the N through to W.

The best you can do is meet up with a number of us whilst you are up here.

I don't really want to temper everyones enthusiasm here, but choosing ones university based on the photographic hobby seems a bit barking mad to me.

Chris - Does Sheffield really meet your degree course expectations. You are contemplating going to a "New Labour" re-badged Polytechnic. After graduating a degree obtained from a traditional "red brick" uniniversity will give you a more attractive CV to prospective employers than one from an ex Polytechnic.

You have the rest of your life to take photographs but only a small window of opportunity to set your long term career path. You need to think very carefully what else Sheffield is giving you rather than being a base for nature photography
