I never see much about Alabama on the forums and I don't remember seeing Wheeler NWR mentioned at all so I wanted to let folks know it is an excellent location for waterbirds and other wildlife.
Each year the sandhill cranes are increasing during the winter as well. This year was about 4,000 of the cranes.
Beautiful image, Liz. Maybe a little bit bigger next time

Liz,
This is one nice shot. Have you considered how lucky you were on the timing? If any one of the birds' wings had been in a different position (up or down), the shot would not be near as nice. All the birds' bodies are in view, but had one set of wings been moved, it would block another bird's body or caused some overlap of wings that (IMO) would detract from the image.
This is one thing I love about photography - that fleeting moment in time, expertly captured. Nice one!

Oh yes, I know how lucky I am. It took quite a few shots to get that one. Best advice I ever got was "if you see it in the viewfinder you've already missed it" and it certainly was true with this one. Getting it pulled up on the computer to see the moment was a very happy moment in itself.
