Just got back from 4 days at the GC! About a foot of snow at the south rim, it was glorious! I went down to the river the first day, but the first few days featured crummy light; fortunately the snow that i was anticipating finally arrived Monday night, so i ended up hiking down through 2 foot drifts Tue morning (only 3 inches fell, but the wind was howling) to catch sunrise, and i probably took half of mty total shots in that 30 minute period Tue morn. Here's a sampler, more at ESS next couple weeks!

I lied, i have to throw in one from the river the first day!
These are great...I'm sure your trip was a blast. I really like #s 3,4,+ 7(especially #7...it reminds me of an imposing ancient fortress). Awesome job.

Some real nice stuff there Stan. How long did it take you to hike to the river? Just a couple of feet of elevation loss I am guessing
Posted by Stan Rose on February 19, 2009 at 4:49 PM
Thanks guys! Jody--it took i believe about 4 hours with stops along the way for photos. Its only 6.5 miles or so at S Kaibab. Coming up maybe 5 hours or so. Its another mile or so along the river to the Ranch. I believe the elevation loss/gain is about 4,500 feet or so, but its the easiest 4,500 feet youll ever do cause the trail is so moderate.

Looks like a great 4 days, Stan!
I really like your South Kaibab trail sunrise, #3.
Too bad you had all that snow.

Looks like some great weather conditions Stan. The second to last is particularly nice.
Second-to-last is my pick as well with its illuminated shapes, gold and blue and those lowering clouds. I also like #1 and #4 quite a bit.

Very nice collection, Stan. It's great that you were able to spend 4 days there. I am longing for solitude myself. I think #3 is my favorite, too.

Nice stuff, Stan. Looks like you had a productive trip. I like all of these, but #3 and the 2nd to last really stand out for me.

Isn't the canyon in winter just incredible? When the snow knocks the particulates out of the air the visibility is phenomenal. Second to last is the winner for me.
I can't help but laugh at Kaibob.. man! Change that 'o' to an 'a'
