Just out of curiosity does anyone see a decline in the eagle numbers spending the winter in your area this winter? I have a few spots near my home that have typically been very good for wintering eagles although this winter there are far fewer around.
I've gone to Alaska a few times to photograph eagles but I always look forward to them wintering in my home ground.

We typically see eagles along the Red Cedar River near Menomonie. This is the first year that I haven't seen any although I've seen a few other places.

I've actually scene more than usual here in southern Ohio.
When I was up in Sauk City, WI I overheard a woman telling someone that there were fewer this year, but don't know if its just an off year, or a trend.
Rob, have not seen any decrease in this area. Are the areas your are seeing the decrease on the lakes there? Did you have more ice because of the weather?
here along the northern PA/Ohio border, I have seen far more eagles this year than I ever have before, I never seem to have a camera handy however

The mating pair I've been monitoring for the past few years are back again. Today, as a matter of fact one was in the nest. Which is a good sign! Usually in March, a number of immature eagles starting hanging out in the area. This leads to some interesting "fights" over fishing rights. It might be a little early for me to comment. Just the other day I was reviewing images from past years to get the time frame right. I was thinking, where are all the eagles, too. The metadata reveals that mid March is the hot time for my part of the world. Here is an image from last March.
Good Luck!
