Hi all
An image from today I am fairly pleased with. Comments welcome, thanks.
Taken with D300 and 400 2.8 with 2x TC. 1/640th, f5.6, iso 200.

Hi Joe, welcome and a good post and a great looking bird. BG looks a bit weird though? Is it windy grass or something? Would have thought a 640th would have frozen that

Its a good start Joe, excellent composition.
I agree the BG looks odd, has it been shot through a wire fence? That's not to imply it was captive; as all to often in our countryside there are "possible good shots" where there is a farm fence between you and the subject!

Hi folks, thanks for the comments :)
I'm not so sure why the background looks so odd. I think it's a combination of focal length and then distance to subject and to background. Here is a link to the uncropped original 'basic' jpeg resized for web only: http://www.jtanner.co.uk/DSC_1170orig.jpg. It was not shot through any fencing at all!

Welcome!
Lovely first post, I suspect the strange look of the background has something to do with the crop, and web compression...?
Anyway, lovely image, those eyes really stand out! Look forward to seeing more of your images!

Nice shot - re the BG, I've had a similar effect too. Seemed to be down to oversharpening the whole image rather the subject in my experience.

Nits covered, and it is a far better short eared owl than any I have. Welcome to the forum.

Hi Joe,
nice shot
I suspect that the background is down to the 400mm 2.8 and 2 X TC and busy background as I have had the same problem with that setup. I have started using a 1.7 TC and that seems to have sorted it.

Ian

Welcome to the forum.
A fine image to begin posting with.
Nicely composed and I love the way those piercing eyes are staring straight towards you.
