Hey guys and gals,
I am going to go on a little vacation this summer with my girlfriend. I want to go somewhere that will be good for some avian photography though. I was thinking somewhere in Florida. My old college professor went to the Alligator Farm once and said that it was great. I am just wondering where you guys would go during the summer months that would be good for some photo ops. I don't care if it's florida or what, but my girlfriend would probably like there to be a not too croweded beach nearby if possible.

I'm located in Black Mountain, NC and don't want to travel a killer distance. 6-8 hours tops I'd say. I'm up for anywhere. Last summer we went to Huntington Beach State Park in SC. It was good, but not a high amount of birds were present, mostly just some Great Egrets and GBHs, and they weren't that tame as the ones I ran into there when I went with my college Ornithology class during the colder months.

What do you all think?

I'm certainly no expert, but I stayed on Sanibel Island for about a week a few years ago, and had a great time. I like alligators better than birds, but there were plenty of birds. I rented a kayak to poke around the mangroves. I like boats.

Okeefenokee Swamp in Georgia is a pretty good place. Rent a Kayak and paddle around the swamp....it's huge!

Sanibel and Viera Wetlands are both excellent sites for Birds. Viera probably has the largest number of species all with in good range. Viera is closer to you (just south of Daytona) Sanibel is down near the keys.

St Augustine, FL is about 8 hours from you, and they have the bird rookery and alligator farm (the birds nest there because they know the gators will keep away other predators),

Also, Viera Wetlands is excellent. it would be about 2 hours further south. I just spent about a week there while visiting family.

hope that helps

I'm not sure how useful it will be for you, but I have been over to Florida from the UK a few times in the last 6 months with another visit in just a couple of weeks time. I need to update it with a bit more information on some other locations I've since visited there but you can read an article on my blog...
Florida wildlife photography. I hope it is of some use
