The Dividing Line(s)
Does this image spin anyone's propeller? I thought I'd get some feedback before I spent any time fiddling with a Raw file. I was fascinated with this rock's shape and the contrasty last light, so I did a quick crop and applied a digital lens blur to put the focus on those interesting shapes.

Yeah or neah?

The lens blur is what ruins it for me. The lines are beautiful enough--they definitely command attention, so I don't think the blur is really necessary.

Interesting lines, but it doesn't totally grab me - I think there's too much stuff going on around the rock that makes it lose the abstract appeal for me. It doesn't grab me like many of the shots on your site do... btw... I think you've convinced me to get off my coast avoiding ass and check out some coastlines nearby, that and your lake elsinore wildflower shots are super!

I kind of agree with Benjamin. I want the background to be sharper.

Eric, this is a good composition and subject being lit, but as others mention the lost DOF seems to immediately draw attention. Otherwise a good scene to work with.

Thanks guys for the honest feedback. I think I'll have to revisit this area again and see if I can isolate the rock a little better. In the trasher'oo it goes.

Eric,

I like it and I think could stand on it's own without the added blur. The light on the fins is enough to highlight your subject and I think the tighter crop works towards that as well. I think perhaps instead of using a blur, how about burning down the area behind the main rock? Use light/dark rather than focus/dof. Just a thought.

Cool lines, but not a compelling image to me.
