My friend owns his own plane, and has offered to take me virtually anywhere in California for only 20bucks an hour so that I can do some aerial photography. I thought about shooting the Nor. Cal coast line with some nice golden light on the water and shoreline. With an opportunity like this though, I would like to explore all my options.
So, if you had an airplane at your disposal--where would you go for aerial photography?
I would fly over to burbank, then pick me up, then....
man that sounds like an awesome opportunity! speaking of which, I should talk to some of my pilot friends.. anyways, if you can do some stuff over the sierras I bet that would be sweet, and I've seen some really neat weird abstracts from aerial shots of the salt patches near SF somewhere. Google earth satellite view might give you some ideas..
Does he do Alaska?
Just kidding, I have seen most of Alaska from the air in years past.
I think your thoughts on the Nor. Cal. coastal area is an excellent idea.
Then if possible swing a little wide just over the OR/CA border and do Crater Lake in the Winter. Of course while at the border you could capture Samuel Boardman SP from the air as well.

I would aim towards locations with color patches, deserts, small lakes, or anything that would look complex from above.
South SF bay area salt fields, Hw-1 coastline, Channel Islands with fog, death Valley from high-up, Lassen volcanic fields, Shasta snow, Crater Lake, yosemite over 1/2 dome, Bishop, river estuaries, snaking rivers on the ground...
I did a Cesna trip from SF to Smith Rocks OR, and the trip was just gorgeous, via Shasta/Crater lake. The flight over SFO airport was interresting, as usually small planes avoid the special tower control there, but I got shots of the boings parked there too. :)
If you wanna prepare, maybe use googel map satellite photos to check potential.
Look at the photographer doing aerial photo for Air France mag for the last 20 years for comp ideas of what to look for.

Just about anywhere sounds awesome. I've always been intrigued by mountainous desert-like areas from the area...the erosion and formations make for some very cool patterns. That being said, I'd love to fly down from Salinas, past the Pinnacles, and down to the Carrizo Plain (I've flown over this stretch in a commercial airline many times and the twisted mess along the San Andreas Fault just intrigues me). I'd say though, you can't go wrong with just about any of suggestions you'll get.

Eric, you win. I will be posting pictures from the trip as soon as I am back...nudity counts as art right?
