This is an often photographed subject in Yellowstone, normally front lit, but by arriving pre-dawn and getting down low I was able to obtain this unusual image of light refracting around the edge of the geyser as its shadow is cast onto the rising steam.

An image with good impact. Always a pleasure to see an image showing a different and creative slant on a scene.

I'm afraid this does absolutely nothing for me John. That big expanse of black to the right really spoils it. I have always believed that if you shoot a silhouette then it should be a strong subject. I can appreciate that you have the benefit of knowing the situation as you shot it but for me, viewing this as a stand alone image, it just doesn't work.

Fraid I'm with Robert here, as an abstract image it is probably OK, but if you hadn't said what it was I would have been sat here scatching my head a little.... great to be thinking out of the box though.

It is an image that you will need to explain i.e. when a 1000 words may be needed to describe the image

Many thanks for the comments folks - a splendid range of thoughts and opinions. Very useful observations. Nice to get such polarized responses. I'll keep mining this rich seam if you'll keep lovin' and loathin' them! Cheers!!
