Recently, the author of the free TLR Sharpening actions, which utilizes three different sharpening steps (capture, creative and output) and can be a bit complicated, has introduced a simpler Landscape Sharpener action that utilizes just one Smart Filter layer.
Using a Smart Filter allows one quite a bit of control over the output with all of the usual benefits of sharpening on a layer, and it really does a pretty good job of image sharpening.
Like most sharpening, this looks its best after a capture sharpening of the RAW file.
The action also incorporates a Local Contrast Enhancement step that I find gives many (most?) images that extra bit of 'pop'.

It's a free download, so there's nothing to lose by checking it out but a bit of time.

I've used TLR sharpening for some time. Good stuff!

John--thanks for posting that. I downloaded it and gave it a try. It is much faster than the full version and does a pretty good job. Now folks have a reason to upgrade to CS3 or CS4--Larry
