I made a couple of trips over to Dell’s Mill this winter and on both occasions was treated to an unusual sight. This is a shot of pancake ice being formed below the dam. I watched as the ice broke off and moved around gradually rounding and compressing the edges before being sucked out into the current and flowing down the river.
I encountered the second unusual sight when I hiked around in back of the Mill and out onto the mill pond. There I found eight Amish men ice fishing on the pond. They had setup a tent and parked one of their horse and buggies by the tent. I’ve seen cars, trucks, ATV’s snowmobiles etc. parked next to ice shacks but this was the first and probably the only time I’ll see a horse and buggy. The Amish fishermen and a few more pictures from the two trips can be seen on my web site.
I really love the composition and textures, but it's pretty underexposed. Your camera meter is obviously trying to record the scene as a middle gray, when the highlights on the ice should be closer to white. You can correct it pretty easily if you shot this in RAW, or if you adjust the white point in curves or levels in PS.
One other thought is that you may want to use exposure compensation to address the metering issue (a classic metering scenario by the way) when you're in the field.
White point Phil, not white balance. In other words, where your brightest highlight is placed in terms of luminosity value. The white balance looks great!
Looks fantastic Phil - a huge improvement to my eye. Hopefully I didn't come across as rude in my critique, as I certainly didn't intend to. Very nice.

My vote goes for the repost...excellent abstract, Phil!
Phillip, the second post is much better. Do you have any others with more water ( cracks ) between the ice? That would take this one over the top, although this is VERY NICE as well! Good eye to see this!

Actually the white balance on the raw file was fine. I just changed the white balance because I like this version better.
Thanks for pointing this out. I went through a tutorial on the subject and this is what I came up with. I’m hoping it is an improvement.
