Fairport Harbor on a cold morning
I'm curious on comments on this B&W shot of the Fairport Harbor Lighthouse on Lake Erie.
This shot has stuck with me during the cold winter months.

Please comment.

Cheers,
Brian

I love the shot, not sure about the vignetting.

I agree with Ken. I looks to me like you have a slight tilt to the right.

I like this shot. The triangular shape of the trees and shoreline makes for a really good composition. May be an optical illusion, but the horizon seems lower on the right side than on the left side.

Rule of thirds would suggest that the object of the photo not be centered. But, here I think, the centering works very well.

Good work!

As a whole, I like the scene a lot, Brian. The vignetting I can do without, though and yes, I see a tilt also...easily correctable. I'd be tempted to crop some from the left side.....just enough to get the building off center.

On second thought...the vignetting adds a little bit of a surreal feeling to the whole scene...which isn't all bad!

It feels a bit bulls-eyed to me with the dead centering of the lighthouse, though the vignette makes it feel a bit more intentional. I guess I would be curious about how else the composition could have been worked. Toni's comment about the tilt is right on, and I'd highly recommend correcting it (easy to do). The black and white conversion looks pretty solid. Bringing up the white point so that you're brightest highlight is right on the edge of clipping would probably give it a little more "pop". All in all, the mood of the place comes through though.

Brian, this scene is real moody to me! I think the vignette adds to this scene and gives a sense of loneliness and that it is a wee bit chilly outside. Along with the tilt ( already mentioned), did you add some blur to this. The left side is really lacking some sharpness. Not that it needs it, but I was just wondering. Nice capture

The tilt has been mentioned...I agree with Joel about the centering of the lighthouse (i.e. I think this would work better in this instance if it was closer to one of the right-hand powerpoints. The vignetting, in this instance, I could do without.

I do like the subject itself and the b/w conversion, very much.
