Suggestions along I-5 between Ca border and Portland

I'm delivering a car to Portland this weekend, was going to stop at Crater Lake, but the weather there is snowy and I am not going to have the proper car or chains. (thanks to those of you that offered help in that thread, I just don't want to take the chance with someone else's car)

So if you were driving up north, and had one day (one afternoon and morning) to shoot somewhere, not far from the interstate (100 miles or so), where would you stop? I could take alternate routes, including 99 (in CA) or possibly 395, but the latter would cause me some concern getting back over the Sierras to finish going north.

I'm going to post this in the California forum too, to get their people's suggestions.

Thanks!

Rodney

Definitely Silver Falls State Park in Silverton, OR. Not far from Salem. Can't go wrong this time of year, although prime greens will be out in a month or two.
It also might be worth taking a jaunt from Eugene over to Florence, and take Hwy 101 along the coast from Florence to at least Lincoln City, then back over to Portland. There are a number of easy locations at the coast to get to in that stretch.

I can't think of much along I-5....most of the photogenic areas in Souther OR to Portland a bit off that path.

Not a whole lot comes to mind in Oregon at this time of year, but since you'll be passing Shasta you might stop in that area. Hedge Creek Falls and Mossbrae Falls are well worth shooting (both located in Dunsmuir).

Posted a couple ideas for WA, but OOPS, you're not coming this far north. So, deleted it… Have a good trip.

I second Chris's suggestion for Silver Fall's but its going to be toward the end of your drive so you many not be getting any magic hour light. If you are in Shasta area for sunrise that may be a good area to shoot photos. Castle Crags State Park in California is another good area a little south of Shasta which may make some good sunrise photos if the weather is good. Although it may tack another couple hours onto your drive you may also consider driving up the oregon coast as well, there are some good shots to be had in Bandon and several other areas. You could either cut over to Portland at Lincoln city or Tillamook depending on time restraints.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I ended up taking I-5 as far north as Williams, CA, then headed west all the way to Ft Bragg, then north along HWY 1 and 101. The winds were so strong at Ft Bragg that I could barely stand, and my lens was coated with spray after one or two shots. It was basically impossible to frame anything or do any meaningful coast shooting.

Then I spent the better part of day two in Humboldt Redwoods Park. Those trees are amazing, but a challenge to photograph. Then I traveled north to Florence, OR, where I turned east again to return to I-5 in Eugene.

I then stopped for a short shoot in Silver Falls state park near Salem. there was a lot of fresh snow, and I was limited on time, so I got some shots of the falls and finished my trip and flew home.

I'll work on a few shots and post them when I get a chance.
