Head West Young Man!
A familiar sight to those driving hiway 177 up through the flint hills north of Council Grove KS. I've driven by this so many times. Last Sunday with the cloudy skies of mid morning it just seemed to stand out even more.
And yes, they are heading west!

The rich history of the Sante Fe Trail around this region is one of the things I love most about the Flint Hills. Council Grove is especially interesting, with the Custer elm in the park, big oak tree (what's left of it) at the post office, and the Last Chance Store. The driving tour around town is quite interesting. It's pretty cool to imagine what life was like back in the 1800s.

Your image reminds me of my trip last summer, when I almost got a photo of a guy on his horse riding along a fence early one morning just south of where this shot was taken. But by the time I stopped and put another lens on, he was gone.

If I recall, this scene is just south of Council Grove isn't it Brad?

Perfect silhouette Brad. The grey skies probably do help with that.

Bill you are right about the history of this area. Council Grove was always one of our field trip destinations when I was in school. I believe there is a scene like this on both the north and south of town. I'm not sure if they are exactly the same though.

It's really nice to hear the about the interest in this part of Kansas and the prairie life that has and still is an important part of the culture. The more I explore and gather information the more interesting it becomes.
As far as the silhouette you both are right. This near life size depiction I'm pretty sure was on the north side of Council Grove and I took this looking South along highway 177. There is another as you head south out of town but it's smaller and atop a sign. This isn't the only silhouette, there is another larger one, but I can't think what or where it is at the moment.
Thanks guys...

In Enid, OK, they have a similar set of steel cutouts of longhorns and cowboys following the Chisolm Trail.

Nice shot, Brad. The gray skies do emphasize the silhouettes better. Council Grove is a cool, historic place with lots to see.

Cool shot Brad. I've often thought about shooting these silhouettes but never have.

Nice silhouette, the only thing you are missing is Clint Eastwood.
