For the past day, I've been getting a "Bandwidth Limit Exceeded" message. Now, I have no doubt that your photos would attract lots of people, but you better make sure they can see them!

Yep, I get the same error. Get on that hosting company's back, we're all starving over here!

Yeah, it has been going on for a few days. He is out in the field, and probably wont be back to Orgeon for at least another week. When I spoke to him around the 2nd, he still thought he would be in the Sierra's for another couple weeks. But that could change.

If Marc is going to be going off on his typical multi-week photo safaris, and is determined to run his own website instead of relying on Ye Olde Smugemuge, he probably should have someone back home "minding the store" and being authorized to deal with the hosting (I first typed "hosing"...Freudian slip?) company on his behalf.

Either that, or make sure he always backpacks with a hand-crankable powered laptop and satellite Internet!

I'd really hate to see how much bandwidth his website burns through per month. I have 750GB worth of bandwidth per month for a pretty decent price and I am sure Marc easily exceeds that on a monthly basis.

^ My thoughts exactly. Either he's using a reseller package that isn't giving him nearly enough bandwidth or someone posted an article somewhere that caused a massive spike in his traffic (I had that happen once and it was a HUGE aberration in my normal traffic so it'd have to have been some really prominent exposure). I would be immensely surprised if Marc's site comes even remotely close to 750GB a month. Even loading full size images you'd have to go through about 105mb of constant, steady data transfer per hour for a whole month straight to even flirt with the possibility of exceeding a 750GB monthly limit. I'm not sure Marc is THAT famous yet.

He might be ahead to rent a co-located dedicated server. My son and I did that for about 3 years just because we wanted the freedom it offered. With a rented dedicated server, you can do what you want, choose your hard drive size and there are no bandwidth restrictions. Cost us around $150/month. I paid most of it and Nick did all the administrative work.

Sounds like he either needs to upgrade to a higher bandwidth plan or change hosts. There are a few hosts out there that offer multiple terrabytes of transfer for a reasonable cost.

Or as Curtis mentioned, co-location is also an option. Its more expensive but you usually get a much higher bandwidth limit and as much storage as the hard drive you put in it. Its not entirely unlimited like curtis mentioned because there is no way they could host the amount of bandwidth a site such as google uses for $150/mo. Usually for higher bandwidth sites like that they set up a per Mbps price so a site that is constantly pushing an average of about 4Mbps would also have a bandwidth cost of maybe a couple hundred on top of the co-location cost. I seriously doubt Marc pushes enough traffic to require that though and he would probably be fine with a regular webhost with a higher bandwidth limit.

Isn't it funny that we're all discussing possible webhosting options for Marc while he's out having a grand time photographing in California?

Should someone try to get in touch with his wife/girlfriend? He may be losing $$$ by the day.

Seeing as it's a Jesse/Jack Widerange site.. they may have set up the hosting for him. Just a thought.

To put the final touch to this whole situation, I'm glad to see Marc's website is back up again.
