I'm going to be making a trip to Colorado in mid April, I get the feeling that this is kind of a transition month for the area. While I'm going there on business I'd like to take a few days for photography. I will be in the Estes Park area which tells me RMNP is a good choice for starters.

I've been wanting to get to the Great Sand Dunes as well but certainly a road trip from Estes. If the timing is right this drive is doable, I have an open ended time frame after the business trip is finished.

Any other locations that you are willing to share for this time of year would be helpful.

Pretty sure RMNP will still be in the grips of winter in mid-April. And for the most part the Front Range area and eastern plains will just be starting to wake up from their winter sleep. Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs or Paint Mines Park about 1/2 hour east of Colorado Springs would be some suggestions.

Pawnee National Grasslands, Flatirons near Boulder, Veedauwoo west of Cheyenne, and of course RMNP are options in the general area. But April isn't necessarily spring in much of CO. You'd have to go the western slope high desert for spring ~ about 4 hours from EP/RMNP.
