I've been looking at the various reviews for the 5D MkII, and I'm probably going to get one, but one of the things I'd like to be ready for is how long the batteries last in cold weather.

My 20D was fabulous in cold weather; I was constantly amazed at how long it lasted. But, my 1Ds MkII is pretty irritating, I have new batteries for it, and in cold weather, it's something I really have to watch out for.
So, I'm just curious how the 5D MkII does in this respect. Anyone try it out in cold weather this winter?

Genny,

I used mine for 5 days in Northern Minnesota, the temperatures averaged around 10 F and the batteries held up amazingly well. I was spending 8-10 hours a day outside without warming the batteries up or charging them. After one day of shooting 500 + images and a few 20 minute exposures both batteries in the vert grip had 75% of their charge left.

Compared to the 20D I think they hold a charge much better, I would even compare them closely (Using two in a vert grip) to the 1D III and 1DS III batteries which I've gotten a full day of shooting and a 2 hour exposure from while retaining a charge of 75%.

Genny, I hope you don't plan on shooting cold weather w/ out an extra battery.

Mine is holding up great and I haven't even had to use my back up battery.

Always nice to have that spare. Just last night I was ready to shoot and the camera would not turn on because the battery was at home in the charger. Spare was in my pocket thank god. With my old 5D and my old D70 I was going through 2 batteries a year for each camera and this was in Calilfornia. So it will be nice to see how the new 5D batteries last in the long run.
