Was looking for something new to photography so going to head out to the Paint Mines Interpretive Park in Calhan, probably on monday.

Are there any special locations there?
Would sunset be the best time?

Thanks!

ive never been there for sunrise, might be interesting since the main formations are in an alcove that faces northeast. For sunset the best light comes a bit early and it will be mostly in shadows at sunset itself. The formations are in a fairly small area but there are other interesting things to shoot in the land that surrounds them. The formations themselves are literally on the side of the road, but unless you illegally climb in (which ive seen people do, but vehemently recommend against) you have to take one of the two trails, one on the west side and one southeast. Theyre each about a mile walk to the formations. Since nothing is blooming yet, i cant say this is a great time of year to visit (i prefer mid winter with snow) but hopefully youll get some good sky color. Its a cool place, well worth visiting.

Stan is right - I would probably wait until ~ late April for some flowers and songbirds. Of course the rocks are cool anytime.

Never even heard of this place, and not very far from my Castle Rock location... have to admit looks interesting now that I did a web search!

The last time I was out there was over a year ago (inexcusable, since it's just a short trip down Hwy 24 for me). I visited it in August, in late afternoon, and got this: http://www.bobfireman.com/PaintMine_028AWEB.JPG.

I thought that the location was rather confining for "prime time" photography, but I do need to get back out there and try different times to shoot.
