Raw image loosing color when selected in Adobe Bridge

Whenever I load new raw images into bridge they appear fine. As soon as I select an image to view the data or open in ACR, the color changes. Like a gray shade goes over the image. Once this gray shade has gone over the image it does not go away, even when deselected. Very frustrating

Jonathan - The thumbnail you see in bridge is built off a small JPG embedded in your RAW file. I'm not sure why it updates, but I'll take a guess. Maybe when you open it in ACR, the thumbnail image gets updated with your ACR defaults? Do you actually have to open the image? Or just click on it? Does the thumbnail look like your image does when you first open it in ACR?

It can also be that you have setup some sort of image style, (sharpening, hue/sat adjs) in camera.
so the embedded jpg will render with your image style.
and once you open up the image, bridge will probably render the file from the raw and you will see a change.

I've encountered the same "problem" and had it explained to me by a friend who does a lot of work with bridge and PS. She basically said what Wim is saying. The in camera settings are probably for vivid colors, higher saturation, and sharpening etc. which is what the thumbnail is based on. Once you select the image, it will pop up in RAW showing, well, the raw image. Play with the saturation and colors a little bit, and you should be able to pretty quickly duplicate what Bridge originally shows

Are you talking about the Bridge preview or the thumbnail? If your camera is set to sRGB color space and you open in ACR in Adobe 98, that will happen.

Philip, a color space only comes in to the equation when you convert your raw file to an output format.
It doesn't matter to what color space your camera is set to if you shoot raw, color space only matters if you shoot jpeg.

Well Wim, if we're talking about the thumbnail previews for RAW, the color space comes into play. Those are generated off of small JPGs created from the RAW.

Anyway, I think we all need Jonathan to clarify exactly what he's doing, and what he's seeing...maybe post some screenshots Jonathan?

If you are shooting RAW Canon files, ACR cannot read the picture style settings. This is Canon software specific. ACR's "Auto" settings might be clicked on in ACR, but shouldn't be desaturating the images. I am going to suggest that a develop setting is setup in ACR and set to the camera default. If either of these is true, you can select all of the new images in the folder, right-click, select Develop Settings, Clear Settings. If this resolves the color issue, my above theory is correct. To remedy this, open a image in ACR and make sure sure all settings have the auto selection deslected. Then, you can clear any settings in ACR and save as "Save New Camera Raw Defaults." Now when you open bridge, the new default settings you made should dictate how the images appear in Bridge.

Even better, I suggest creating a starting point for each camera you are using. You can actually get ready made camera profiles for ACR from http://www.ejphoto.com/acr_order_page.htm Just follow the directions in the setup pdf to set the correct default in ACR. I hope this helps.

I think David Bostedo had it right to begin with. When you first load the thumbnails they use the camera camera settings, but once you click on an image, or if you let bridge catch up it will apply your default ACR settings to the thumbnails. Like you, I was always disappointed with the change, because the original camera profiles that came standard with ACR were not very good.

The solution for me was downloading the recent beta profiles that Adobe made available. Now when Bridge applies the profiles to the thumbnails they look like the original thumbnails. I hope this helps, if I can find a link to the profiles from adobe I'll post them. They were very helpful, and the color interpretation is much better especially in the red and yellows.

Here is the link to the ACR Camera Profiles.
Scroll down that page and you'll see a graphic on how to use them after you open a RAW file in ACR ('Getting Started').

Thanks everyone for all the info.
ACR Camera Profiles was exactly what I needed. Would have never figured that out.
John thanks for the link. You guys are great.
